The Thompson barrels for the compensator are threaded.
The non-compensator barrels are smooth and the front sight is pressed on in the semi-auto guns.

If the barrel isn't threaded, the only way to install a comp is to have the muzzle threaded.
To get the standard front sight off, you have to have to use some force or cut the band.

You can use a DULL chisel to partially cut the band on the underside.  You want to "almost" cut the band through without touching the barrel.
This actually stretches the band and allows it to slip off without too much force.
Be careful, its very easy to cut into the barrel so use a very dull chisel.

The non-cutting method is to just use a big brass or really hard wood drift to drive the sight and band off.

Once the sight is off, you'll have a smooth, enlarged muzzle that can be threaded if you can find a threading die or get a gunsmith to do it.
