TNVC recently ran our final Armed Professional class of the year at our “home” range in Alliance, Ohio on October 1-3.  This is a staple location in our training from the very beginning, and it really ends up being like old home week when we are there.  We had 15 highly motivated students in the class; largely composed of civilian students, most of whom were recent Nightfighter 101 graduates.



The weather was, well, Alliance weather.  Of course, we got wet, but not too bad and we avoided much of the heavy stuff through breaks.  The weather did help with a great training opportunity to show the effects that humidity, inversion layers, lack of wind and smoke from gunfire can all combine to significantly reduce image intensification capabilities.  Illumination throughout the weekend was nearly perfect for NVG use.



The class had a healthy mixture of monoculars and binoculars.  We did not have any goggle-related issues or problems.



We saw primarily red dots on the carbines—a lot of students running high mounts too.  Again, with the large percentage of the class completed our Nightfighter 101 or similar courses, the understanding of the value of high mounts was evident.
Student gear and equipment issues were minimal.  We did have a MAWL which had troubles with the propeller cap moving.  A little bit of lubrication and letting it sit overnight solved that problem.  We also had a department issued DBAL A3 have trouble with its illuminator.  It seemed sporadic in its function and will likely go back to Steiner for a tune up.



Armed Professional in Alliance is so much fun to teach; the off-campus training that we can get there is unmatched at any other venue we teach at.  Walking through the woods, going into real structures, and walking downtown under NVGs is a blast to do, and we really appreciate the opportunity to provide this training to our students.



We had an industry partner and fellow trainer at the course—Jon from Kinetic Consulting.  He is a personal and professional friend, and we enjoy having other instructors in the courses.  They can always add a great piece of knowledge here and there, and it is fun to see them continuing their learning.
