Can anyone identify this sword/saber? It has "US" on one side and "E pluribus unum" on the other.

US Army Officer's Saber is my guess.

ETA The US is different on the ones I looked up.

It looks like the M1902 with some elaborate etching.

It looks just like an army officers saber to me.  They still make them, and they are still part of an officer's dress uniform (although very rarely worn).  I wouldn't be surprised if the etching design had changed a little over time.  Yours does look a little older.

I believe it's from the 1930s or 40s. It was handed down and I really didn't know much about it.
