I went from 5.56 with an 11.5 inch barrel to a 7.5 inch which was fun as hell.  But to reduce noise, flash and get a little more velocity out of the 5.56 round, I went up to 12.5 inch.  I have also ran a 12" 6.8 SPC which great ballistics but ammo costs sucked.  I am really missing my 7.5 barrel.  Any caliber options out there for decent effective range out to say 150 yards?

Ill be the idiot that says .223 with the right load works....

Its got more energy than a 5.7 out of a p90. Just saying

Eta. Never mind read all your post. Yes its loud and flashy. I have a pig on mine and it cut out the loudness and flash. 7.5 barrel is not the way to go in 5.56 for 150 yards tho. It is great for a 50 yard car gun though.

300 blackout is a superior round hands down for something that short, but you gotta pay the price.

How's the flash and noise of a .300 blackout out of a 8" barrel?

It actually doesn't seem that bad. It's my understanding that the .300's powder burns much faster then that of a 5.56, so there isn't as much left to ignite outside of the barrel. I only put 80 rounds through mine and the concussion and flash was less then that of my 10.5" 5.56. My 8" blackout has a AAC 51t muzzle break on it too, and it still doesn't have that oomph that my 10.5" with a phanton flash suppressor has. The 10.5" 5.56 has much more of a "bang" and flash to it then my blackout even with the break, so I would say it's much better. Just my .02

The beast in question... 8" .300 Blackout with AAC 51T break
(sorry about the crappy phone pics)

Sweet!  I have ignored the .300 Blackout after a NFA dealer told me they were not accurate.  I might have to look into them more.  I didn't realize they used the same bolt and mags, hell of a selling point.

I've come to the conclusion that just because a dealer has an SOT license does NOT mean that they are any more knowledgable about firearms than every other fudd, dipshit gunstore owner out there. Some are very good, some don't know what the hell they're talking about. Yours I would take with a grain of salt. Granted, 300BLK has a maximum effective range of approximately 300 yards to where it starts to see significant bullet drop and velocity loss, but inside of that, it's an effective round.

I know a few guys who put down steel at closer to 300 yards with PDW length guns that would probably argue differently. I'll stick to my 10.5" gun, it's short enough for me, even as a car gun, but vSBRs are more capable than people give them credit for.

Can I just necro this thread to ask a similar question instead of making a new thread? How would a 9mm be out of a 7 inch barrel at the already discussed range of ~150 yds? Is it still an effective defense round at that range?

That is why I changed my mind about a G-5, am about to order the HVT-QD instead, and am seriously contemplating a 300BLK upper.

I'm still going with a 12" Stealth, but am looking at a 300 upper too.  Wasn't really wanting a sub 10", but have become increasingly convinced that is where the 300BLK shines.  I do have a couple questions though.  At what length does the 300 start losing velocity due to decreased barrel length, what twist, and will Gemtech, AAC, et all warranty their cans on such a short barrel?
