| The sponge I used for the AR I had was a "synthetic sea sponge" from Walmart that ran about $3. It was in the face wash section, and I just cut it up into 4 pieces. I did a pistol recently that I got some diffrerent pieces of sponge from Michaels craft store, but I liked the Walmart deal better. |

I use to buy the sponges in the paint section at Walmart but they quit selling them a few months ago. I will look in HBA for the sponge your talking about. Thanks for the info.

The Refinishing Forum (like other Tech Forums) never cease to a amaze me (and I mean that). I have learned so much here from regular guys (and women!). I must admit, I have to find a 'test' gun in my collection and try my luck with refinishing it. I am not sure what pattern I want to try, but when I do I will post pics! Here's my submission of a Multicam inspired sponge job. Came out ok, I actually practiced the scheme on MS paint if you can believe that. Paint is Krylon and some Rustoleum. Had to mix some of the paint on a paper plate before spongeing to get the right shades.

I have to ask this cuz I didn't see it asked in this thread...
I would love to paint my M4 the only problem is I'm kinda scared to do it.. For a one major reason, when it's painted and I'm going to clean it will the solvent wash away the paint? I have painted a few guns for fun my small .22 plinker, BB Gun, my 1Gaugege, and my Airsoft gun. They all came out great and look very clean I'm just wondering about the solvents? Thanks for your time... |

It is so damn hot right now that the spray paint dried just about instantly. I would paint one side and wait about 5 min tops before flipping it over to paint the base layer on the other side.
Total time was maybe 30 min total for the whole project... Tan base OD stripes Then sponged on tan/green over opposite color Added a little brown Finished with a little tan over spray to knock down the brown/green since I wanted it to be more tan-ish The color in real life is closer to the first pic, but the tan is less gray than the pics. 
In person it blends in real well it the dry and green grass.

I just did a base of the tan and used a sponge for the green and then did a really mist with the tan again to give it a duller look. I've gotta get another gun so I can try doing a multicam...just tell the wife

Just got done with some sponge camo, I think it needs some od green. It is done in Cera-Kote Federal Brown and Coyote Brown. I tried to add camo green krylon but no go. The cera-kote is to flat and the krylon just soaked right in. The cell phone pics are crappy for some reason they look yellow.
yellowish color in the middle is the camera. 
This color should blend in well this winter in the red oak of North Texas. I may get some OD green Cera-Kote and touch it up. |

Did a PMag. Trying to get up the courage to do the entire thing. Part of what's stopping me is I don't want to lose my Vltor and Adams Arms logos.
The lower is a cheap one I had from my first build. Painted that with a Satin Krylon and I like the color, but it's too shiny.

I'm really imperssed. You guys are doing some bang up jobs!
I need to get some more guns to paint up soon. Sucky thing is that I have to wait until spring as I have to do it outside. 
I do have a supressed 22LR. SBR AR project that I am working on this winter and hope to have it ready for paint this spring. |

I don't baby my gun at all and it has signs of wear and drops and what not, but i kinda like it that way. My barrel got a little paint rubbed off last time out after around 200± down the barrel really quickly. I acidentally leaned it on a damp towel in the back of my truck and it smudged the paint but didn't take it off. doesn't distract from the camo though. I'm pretty impressed with it. |

Forgive me if I missed it, but did anyone have to do any prep work on barrels or stocks before painting? After reading this, you guys did awesome jobs, I am ready to throw myself into it.

Personally I just do a good wipe down to remove any oils or grease off of all parts. I used Acyrsol to wipe down everything with. I didn't do any type of sanding or anything in case I wanted to go all factory finish again.
Never had any problem(s) with the paint not sticking to any metal or plastics. Hope that helps.

First off, sorry for the crappy cell phone pics. Hope you like it. I am too chicken to paint an expensive gun.
Here is an old 870 20 gauge I’ve had since I was 13 years old. It needed some sprucing up and modernizing. I cut some holes out of the stock and made my own recoil pad. I also trimmed the barrel down and cut out every other bridge. Technique was using Krylon Gray Primer base all over, then striped with Walmart $1 Flat White. Using White to sponge in gray areas and vice versa. Then sponge Walmart $1 Flat Black over the whole gun. The white was kinda runny and has a milky look to it. I like how it came out. 
This is a Ruger Air Hawk .177 pellet rifle. I modified the stock some to make a thumb hook, and lowered the channel for the grip some. Technique was completely cover in Khaki. Stripe with Forrest Green. Then sponge in opposite colors. I think I may add a third or fourth color, not sure yet.

Since I sold my RRA AR to fund my LaRue PredatAR I was left without a varmit rifle for the last two months of hunting. I had an old Savage 110 in .243 that was collecting dust and decided to give it a freshening after reading this thread.
Very plain wood stock, with no woodwork or anything on it. I used 3 different colors of paint, brown, OD and a tan color. I also used a can of rustoleum stone textured finish paint to add some grip on the stock in the right areas. I don't think it came out too bad for my first try. Between the cell pic and my basement lighting it looks a lot greener than it actually is. Next up is an old marlin model 60 .22.
