I have a friend who's got a Socom16 that he just purchased and is having a problem. He sent me the email below. I've got a Standard and haven't had too many FTE's in over 1K rounds. I chalked mine up to not enough grease on the bolt and that seemed to fix mine. I recommended that to him, but thought I'd run it past you guys in case I'm missing something. FYI, he already knows about adjusting the gas system and has tried that. And I recommended NOT shooting much commercial ammo with it either, so he is aware of that too.
"So I put about 100 rounds through the SOCOM so far. I need to order some new magazines anyway, and the one that the guy gave me with it is definitely having problems. One other source of malfunctions is failure to extract. I don't have a cleaning kit yet so the gun is getting pretty dirty, but I didn't expect that to cause function problems at this dirtiness level. It seems like the gas system isn't blowing the bolt open hard enough. If I pull the bolt all the way back and let it go the extractor always grabs the shell, but at least with the Walmart hunting .308 ammo sometimes it fails to happen correctly when cycling from the gas from the previous round. Anything I should know about?" |
| If its a used rifle, I'd have him thoroughly clean everything. The chamber, the gas system top to bottom. Then I'd suggest a USGI extractor for the rifle. The SAI extractors really are junk. On my rifle it seemed to wear very quick and when I replaced mine for the USGI the SAI was looking pretty poor. The rifle had less than 1000 rounds through it. |

Thanks. I sent him a link to this thread, so he can keep track of the suggestions.
Not to hijack my own thread here, but... My Standard is a 2003 model. It's got a TRW barrel, but I believe that everything else is SA. I've got about 1,200 rounds through it so far with hardly any issues. I clean it regularly. But I've NEVER been able to get the damn bolt out of the receiver. I pry on it and it just won't pop out. I just can't seem to pull the bolt back far enough to get it to come out. It seems like the slot doesn't go back far enough or something. How in the @#$% did they even get the bolt in there in the first place? Any other suggestions for me getting the damn thing out??? |
