What is the realistic accurate range for 2 3/4 in rifled foster style slugs? I usually shoot them with great effect in training at 50 yards, but since this is all that is required for qual in this state, I've never taken the time to shoot them from greater distances.

50-75 yds. Beyond that, they dop like a brick and run out of gas very fast.

Look at the trajectory table printed on the back of a Remington 5-rd slug box.

yeah, I would say that 100yrds is pushing it.

While it is possible to hit out to 100 yards, I would agree and say accurracy and consistancy will deteriorate past 75 yards.

I'm not sure if you're using bead sight or rifle sights. I would assume that it is a smooth bore since you mentioned quals.

I've shot at 100 yards using 1oz fosters from Remington and Winchester. The gun is a Winchester 1300 Deer with rifle sights and rifled bore. The sights are set for 50 yards. The slugs hit a little high at 25 yards, and a little low at 100, but it's nothing that can't be compensated for.

I'm looking to push the envelope to 150 yards, maybe further, just to see what happens.

Nope, no trap. Just thinking that my Baikal SxS would make a heck of a dangerous game double rifle out to about 100 yards with the right slug in it.

I shot some reduced recoil slugs at 300 yards once. Accuracy was non-existent (2 hits on a body size target out of 9 shots). The holdover was around 15 feet high. I changed to 3" magnum slugs and the accuracy was still horrible, but the holdover came down to around 5 feet.

I hunted deer for years in a shotgun-only state with a smooth-barreled Remington 870. I easily held 3" or 4" groups with it from a bench at 100 yards. Offhand I had no problem doing 6" or so groups at the same distance.

I have taken a number of deer to 125 yards. Beyond that, I never tried it. And wouldn't.

I don't have any experience with the new rifled shotgun barrels because I moved to rifle states about the time they started coming on the scene. They are reputed to be more accurate.

I had a 20ga Stoeger SxS that was incredibly accurate with Fiocchi sabots. It was a smooth bore, modified on one side, IC on the other. I ran 2 slugs almost through the same hole at 25yards, no bench, just standing.

I never did test it beyond 50yards, and it has a new owner now.

It kinda' sounds like you need to buy various slugs and give it a go. You never know till you try. Some of these new sabots have some incredible trajectories and muzzle velocities out to 125 yards. Check the Winchester ammo site.

Rfiled bores and sabots can add practical distance;however, the question pertained to Foster slugs.

Just recently I've been shooting a few slugs through my 870 Police Magnum @ 100 yards just to see if I could hit anything. Surprisingly enough, I can consistently hit my target with plain old Remington Slugger loads. It's more of a pattern than a group, but with more practice I think it would be better. My shotgun has rifle sights, btw.

I think it depends on what shotgun you asre shooting and what rounds are have.

My brother has a Mossberg 695 (12G, bolt action) and he can shoot those Hornady SST 2-3/4" sabots at 150 yards all day. That gun will group 3-4" at 150 yards and 2" groups at 100 yards. It is a very nice gun.

My hunting shotgun of choice is my Savage 210F (12G, bolt action). I shoot 3" Winchester Partion Gold sabots and I can get a solid 3" group at 100 yards. I shot a 7 pointer this year, that was easily at 125 yards.

Can't beat a dedicated 12G bolt action shotgun!

Iowa until recently has been a shotgun state for deer and for the most part still is. I have killed many deer with a Mossberg 500 12 ga. using the 28" bird barrel with the improved cylinder choke tube. Some brands of foster slugs would hold 4"-6" groups at 100 yds. easily and usually around 4" as a norm. Others would be 12" or better. You just have to try different brands to see what works best.

hey same here! i have a HD Baikal double barrel 12ga. loaded with Rem. low recoil 1oz. slugs that pattern into nice clustering holes spot-on @ 25yards

don't laugh, but for HD the Aguila mini-slugs outta my Baikal are also amazingly accurate and would put the hurt'n on any BG!

i took one of these Aguila apart and photographed it with a recovered 230gr. Black Talon for comparison here and here.

Slugs, especially Foster type slugs, lose velocity rapidly compared to centerfire rifle bullets due to diameter and their hollow construction, but that is still quite a chunk of lead to get smacked with! I have fired 12ga. slugs many times on an 18x24 steel target at 200yd. and made hits even with a bead sight once I knew where the gun printed. OK Highway Patrol used to require qualification at 100yd. and familarization firing at 200yd. if I am not mistaken. 100yd. is a fairly easy offhand shot if you know your gun and ammo...as mentioned 4-6in. groups seem to be the norm in smoothbore guns.

There are many stories of Cape Buffalo and even Elephant being killed with 12ga. slugs in Africa...I cannot testify to their truthfullness, however. Myself, I think I would prefer the warm, fuzzy feel of a big bore .375 H&H and up rifle to any of my shotguns in the African bush.

My shottie is sighted in at 75 yards with foster slugs. I have hit 8" steel plates out to 100 yards with it. Wouldn't want to try much further though...

I have hit targets out at the 300 yard line with slugs thru my smoothbore. I had to aim about 5 feet above the target .
