Bit of a different take on the usual quest for a Scout scope.

I have a Marlin 336C that I wanted to set up as a scout gun, but I'm finding that I'm not the biggest fan of this style. I put XS ghost ring sights and Scout rail on and then mounted a Burris 2-7x32 Pistol scope with an illuminated reticle. In hindsight I wish I had gone with the standard XS rail that has the integrated rear sight, but being that the ghost ring on mine is secured with red loctite that's no longer really an option.

I would like to find a scope that has around 5" of eye relief, that way I can mount the scope all the way back on the rail and have a good sight picture. I would prefer to keep a variable power optic in the 2-7x range, vs a low fixed power scope.

Most rifle scopes have an eye relief of 2.5" to 4".

Most handgun scopes have an eye relief of 12" to 22".

Most scout, or intermediate, scopes have an eye relief of 8" to 15".

Getting a scope with 5" of eye relief is tough. Look at the Burris Timberline 3-9, which has 3.5" to 5" of eye relief.

Might work, but a 30mm tube on a lever gun is a but chunky, IMO.

I do like that vx-R, might be what I go with if nothing else fits the bill. I could have sworn that I'd seen a Leupold with 5-6" of eye relief, maybe the VX-II or VX-III line?

If I can't find a scope that works does anybody know of a mount that will cantilever the scope back instead of forwards? Kind of like the way shotgun barrels have cantilevered barrels?

One of the things I used to see on guys' M14/M1A rifles is a LaRue cantilever mount, reversed so it extends to the rear rather than forward, to get the scope closer to the eye even though the base is forward.

Not sure how well it works long-term and all, but there it is.

I tried this with my ACOG in Larue mount, but the rail is a Weaver style and the space between the rails is too narrow.

I found a Burris that has 6" of eye relief and may work. Be better than mounted all the way out on the rail at least.

Thanks for the help guys, keep the ideas coming.

I just ordered that scope for my Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle....It'll be here tomorrow and I'll be mounting it on a LaRue LT-104 mount. I've used that mount backwards in an attempt to use a different scope on the GSR, but due to the GSR's ejection path, it didnt work. It kept spitting the shells into the locking levers of the mount.

I'll be happy to post pics of the scope when it arrives. But I wont be able to take it to the range for a few days....

The Nikon 1.65-5x36 SlugHunter Shotgun Scope has 5" of eye relief:

I think they have a muzzleloader scope with similar eye relief, too.

Please do, if nothing else it's a nice scope on a nice rifle to look at.
