So I got a brand new Marlin XT22 last weekend; black stock, blued, threaded bbl. Yesterday evening I decide to install the weaver bases so I can get this thing scoped and have some fun.
Rear base goes on fine. Front base , front screw is good, but then I over torque the rear screw and it freaking shears off!!! F***! D$%#!!! Walked around the garage for 10 minutes cussing myself. I was using my dandy Borka torque wrench, at 30 inch-pounds. Three screws went in fine, I'm thinking the 4th was some crappy metal. To make matters worse, I used some loctite (blue thankfully) on the threads. How can I get this thing out of there? Without screwing the threads? What if I say screw it, just going to mount the base with one screw? How much pain am I in store for with keeping a good zero and the integrity of the scope mounting? Pic of my fail...

Drill a smaller diameter hole in the center of the screw and use a small E-Z out (left handed tap)

Well, I went and got me an EZ-Out and a tap to chase the threads, and when I was drilling the pilot hole for the EZ-Out Lo and Behold, the screw shaft decided to screw itself down into the receiver! Pretty much bottomed it out.
Got to looking at it, and thought "I bet I can get a new screw in there with enough thread to hold!". Test fit a screw and it was a bit too long, so I did what every good ARFCOMMER does and broke out the dremel. Started grinding off the bottom of the screw, test fit, grind, test fit, etc. and got it short enough where it wasn't bottoming out but still had 4-5 threads in the hole. The broken off screw is down in the receiver and bottomed out agsinst the top of the barrel, so no receiver obstructions or anything like that. Not an optimal solution, but I think it'll hold (it is only a 22 after all). Just for kicks took the rifle out back and took some shots at the burn pile; from about 60 feet I was pegging a 4" cedar stump about 80% of the time. Using just the weaver bases as sights! Anyway, my new toy will be finished when I get some 30 mm rings (got a 1/5-4x scope just laying around in the safe) and I'll get it properly sighted in. I'm scoring this one FAIL AVERTED!!.
