Anyone know where to get something to use for a "scale" pattern like they seem to be fond of at: www.guncoat.com ...very interesting as it seems the pattern is sprayed over the base coats and not masked off...but that could just be how it appears in the images thanks Something like this www.guncoat.com/html/HKVIPER.html |

A lot of guys are using laundry bags and such. I tried one using a metal gutter guard (like you put on your gutters to keep the leaves out) and it worked pretty good. The pattern you are showing appears to have had a striped base coat. Then the pattern was applied in opposite colors. Looking at the pistol from rear to front the base coat must have started as khaki and then striped into green then back to khaki and so on. Whatever was used to mask the parts was then applied and finally the slide was striped with the opposite color from the base. |
Thanks, I'd like something that I could actually stick on to get a nice sharp line...it's actually not even for a gun but I though I would ask here anyway...might have to make it myself I guess |

I've met this guy and seen his guns in person at a Portland Oregon Show. (very impressive work, and very unique way of doing camo and refinishing.) Anyway, I dont think it was a fishnet stalking or rain gutter that was used on his guns, (It almost looked free-hand, but maybe a reverse stensil that only leaves the outline of the scales showing.) -J |
agreed it's not fishnet or gutter...it's too "exact" and sharp...looks like a self adhesive stencil to me...I asked him about it but it turns out it's a copywrited method so he couldn't tell me much which is fine with me...I can't realy blame him...it looks awesome and he's making money off of it...I'd just like to put it on a motorcycle that I want to paint |
there was actually a company down in Arizona that did it the same way. but for some reason, about a year ago, they vanished. the way they painted is what i pattern my refinishing off of. |

That is actually a prototype pattern done for Duracoat. There have been a few firearms done in that pattern. They had a killer 50 cal at shot in that same scale pattern. When I talked to the rep at shot I was told the pattern would become available soon, as would the diamond plate but would not tell me when. The diamond plate became available right after shot 06' |
| I just picked up a couple of sniper veils at the local surplus store for less than $10 each. They won't give the exact same pattern as the photo you posted but they should give a good "snakeskin" look. I'll put some pics up as soon as I find something to try it out on... |
