So I sent off the paperwork and money to apply for my SOT for this July 1st...I understand the post/pre dealer samples as far as what is what, my question is the department letter for the post dealer samples...Who all can give you that? Just the CLEO?  Also do they type it up or do you?  Also what does it need to say?  Is it hard to get these letters??  Thanks

Thanks, are they hard to obtain?  I know it probably depends on differant departments, but do you have to "know" someone or just be halfway normal.

Well it sure wouldn't hurt to know someone on the department and to at least make a sales pitch, and you should bring some sort of business aspect to your pitch. Just going in there asking them to sign a letter so you can play with NFA toys will make you look like an amateur. It probably also depends on what weapons both you and the department are interested in.

I would think a letter like the one posted might make the NFA crew wonder what was going on alittle bit 1 department asking to try "1 of every thing" probelly isnt all that common. but if you can get one like that

well.....

I planned to work up some kind of sales pitch, offer of services, etc.  Good advice.
Thanks.

I was thinking at least 3 or 4 weapons on the letter. ....to start with anyway.

You might want to be careful here.  Here is a link to a local case where a dealer was obtaining Sample Letters from local LE with the purpose of acquiring the weapons for personal gain, and not for any actual LE purposes.  I believe it is still the largest seizure of firearms in ATF history.  I believe numerous individuals were indicted including the CLEOs that were signing the sample letters.

When they did the seizures, there were 55 gal. barrels with MP5 receivers ready to be built.   The seizure was so large that ATF rented a warehouse to store everything.

So make sure you cover your bases.

You will be able to do it best by getting a good relationship with local Law Enforcement.

Most will not do it if you just walk in and ask for a letter.

You cannot get a letter for something the Department already has.

And before you get the letter check to see how the item is registered, the letter has to match how the item is registered.

We had an issue with the HK G36 rifles we received.  The first letter had HK G36    and the rifles we registered as HK G36K

They have become very picky about post samples lately.     Also it is best to do one firearm per letter.

We have a local training officer that will get us a letter for anything because we will let the Department play with it on our range.   They will even deliver the letter.

I think you're still under the impression that you can just walk into the LE department and just get them to sign off on whatever you want. I'd sure be leary if I was the Chief or Sheriff and some random FFL came in asking me to write a letter for automatic weapons that I really had no interest in to begin with. So what exactly is your sales pitch going to be?

I don't have that impression at all. I was just curious as to what a letter should look like and if they were hard to get. We already service our local dept. with our gun smithing and DuraCoating. I know the cleo, just not buddy-buddy with him. He has signed a a lot of form 4's for me thus far, so he knows I have nfa weapons and suppressors.
My sales pitch would be, in (the future) not the day I get my sot,... If you ever plan to issue patrol carbines(which they don't have) keep us in mind. I think they would possibly use us being were in a small town, and not too many ffl/sot's around.
I truely appreciate all the advice, btw the 3-4 weapons was just a joke I truely don't plan to say hey I'm joe blow ffl and want some cheap toys.
