I have a pile of old FAL mags laying around, some painted, most blued...many of 'em have rust on them. Is there a fast/easy way of removing all remanents of rust from them, without having to spend hours with a wire brush or wheel and scraping it off?

Once all the rust is off I'll be finishing them off with a bake-on finish I haven't yet decided on, but step one..remove the rust.

Thanks!

how bad is it? I've used Flitz polish to take of surface rust. For deeper rust you'll need to remove it mechanically.

get em sandblasted would be the easiest.  If not, then get a wire wheel for a hand drill and have at it.  I had some old ammo cans I bought for $2 each and just used the wire wheel on my drill and it wasnt too bad.

Drat, I was hoping there was some "dunk 'em in a tank of something-or-other for an hour, and the rust will come right off" solution

Welp, wirewheel it is...thanks guys!

If they aren't too bad you can use some naval jelly to get most of it off.

I use Jasco (sp?) Prep and Prime.  If it's surface rust, you should be able to soak it in Jasco for a few minutes and clean it off with a toothbrush.  The rust will turn into a black scale that will come right off.  It will slightly etch the metal also.

I also saw something a while back that you could make a certain solution and attach one battery post to the part and one post to a metal rod and the rust would just fly off the part and onto the rod.  I dont recall where I saw it, but it looked like it worked very well.

Naval Jelly
Make sure you use gloves and good ventilation and or a respirator.
Then rinse with tap watter
works well.

Found a website on electrolytic rust removal.  Looks fairly simple.
