It is probably gunked up. Try spraying some penetrating oil on it and let it set for a bit. The nut on my 870 was a bit tight too. When I got it off it had alot of crud built up on the threads.

I tried WD40...a lot of WD40.  Even had my neighbor help, the two of us couldn't get it to budge.   It can't be that hard on all 870s!

PB Blaster.  Spray it on and let it soak.

Which tool are you using?  Not all 870 fore end wrenches are alike.  I prefer the Brownells tool:

This is the tool I bought....It definetly can't be the best tool out there.

I'll soak it and let it sit for about a week and see what I can do when I come back in town.

I just used pliers, opened up to mate with the two notches. You can apply some good torque in this fashion. I also covered the pliers with tape at the ends to prevent damage.

Is the nut on tight from a previous install and being over-torqued or is the forend aged and has become locked up with corrosion?

Try heating it up, a propane can torch or maybe even a hairdryer could help bust it.

It is an old police issued shotgun, so it rode in a car for who knows how many years.  I actually acquired two, the other one is just as tight, but I'm only messing with this one right now...If I screw it up, I'd rather only do it to one.

I'm letting them soak...I'm out of town for a week.

And unfortunately they, weren't free.....but pretty close to it.

I'll be damned if that nut is going to beat me though!

Last time I had trouble with mine, I got some wide pliers and loosened it reeeeeaaaal gentle-like so as not to mess up the finish. Seemed to work okay.

I tried needle nose pliers too.  Either I was doing something significantly wrong, or its on there pretty good.

We will see how it goes after a week of sitting with penetrating oil.
