| I just ordered a RCBS Ammomaster 50 BMG pack from Midway.. :) I have a few quesitons, if anyone here can help me with. I've been reloading for over 20 years now and have lot's of experience with many calibers. The 50 is a bit on the scary side and I want to get a few things straight. How many times can you reload typical military brass? I have Lake City 83 that came from Talon. Also, what are the available powders that are used? Surplus stuff? Are there any new commercial powders suited for 50 BMG? What about primer crimping, is it a must to crimp the primer in place? The Talon stuff I had gotten was crimped. Thanks. |

How many reloads you get out of your brass depends on how you reload it. If you full length size your brass all the time you'll only get a few reloads out of them. If you shoot it in your rifle, all you need to do is neck size them. Be sure to check for length and trim them AFTER sizing them. If you are going to use surplus stuff then use surplus powder, 5010 being the most common for the .50. If you want to load match bullets or heavy bullets, try VihtaVouri VV20N29 or VV29N41 and Hodgdons H50BMG. The crimp you see on the primers is per the Military and you'll need to remove it before you can re-prime your brass. Some commercial stuff is crimpped, kind of looks like the primer pocket is offset. You can buy a Chamfer to remove the crimp from most reloading places. You don't need to crimp the primer pockets when you reload. Here's the load that I'm using right now, LC brass trimmed to 3.90", 700gr AP, 215grs. of 5010, CCI 35 primer. This is a good load in MY rifle (AR-50) so use at your own RISK! |
