Recently got a used Python.  It's a solid, mechnically perfect gun but showing it's age.  Sent it to Colt for factory refinishing, but they didn't want to do the grips.  They are undamaged orginial wood  and the gold pony inserts are still in great shape.  The finish (varnish, or whatever) has become brittle and is chipping off on the outside lower edges of the grips down to the wood.

I'd like advise on products/procedures to bring the grips back to orginial condition or better.

Currently thinking about covering the inserts with model clay, using Miniwax stripper and a tooth brush, then Truoil.

Superior intellects please chime in.  Referrals to professional refinishers welcomed.

Thanks.
