Can a Mosin shoot commercial .308 ammo or does it only shoot 7.62x54.  I know that they are basically the same cartridge but I know of some rifles that can only shoot .308 and not 7.62R.  Thanks for your help.

A Mosin-Nagant shoots 7.62 X 54R.  It will not fire a 308 and you shouldn't try.

If you compare the cases you will see that the dimensions are considerably different.

Not only are the cases completely different, but the bullets are different.

7.62x51 is uses a .308 diameter bullet, 7.62x54R uses .311.

Thanks for the quick answers.  I had never compared the bullets side by side.  I must have been thinking of the 7.62 nato.  Thanks again.

for the purpose of this discussion, .308 & 7.62 nato are the same! ergo DO NOT interchange w/ 7.62R

To make it a little more clear, the 7.62x54R is a rimmed cartridge. The .308 Winchester / 7.62x51 Nato cartridge is rimless.

Not sure if a special ammo shipment to AK costs wayyy too much to order crates of 54r ammo. The Czech and Hung 147gr milsurp is very good, and 10 cents a shot down here.

For one thing, the 54R is 3mm longer than the .308, among other differences.

You might very well screw up your rifle or yourself if you try it.

Are you sure about that, I have never read anything that supports that statement. Take that as a question please.
