OK - Gem-Tax sounded pretty good so I call my FFL.
Tell him I buy the can, send the Form to GemTech - they pay the stamp. FFL: That's not legal
Call Gem-Tech: "What's not legal - putting a stamp on the envelope?"
Gem-Tech calls him and "straightens him out." (their own words) Call my FFL back - step through it again. I come in and buy a can I fill out the forms and send it off to GemTech, who pays the stamp. When I receive my form, I drop in and pick up my can. Guy refuses to do it that way. Insists HE send and receive the paperwork. Claims he needs to do it that way so he can track sales and the NFA item. I call bullshit - the sale of the can is his record and the item # is the NFA tracking number. I don't want his hands in the fucking soup because all they ever do with forms is forget to mail them or forget to call you and notify you it's been approved and received. Guy says that's the way he does it and "it's his license" if anything goes wrong. Like WTF could go wrong.
Is the guy a controlling, overbearing dealer? Every time I deal with the guy - he tosses out some BS nonsense and when I call him on it, his fallback is it's his policy. The other option is I am a hard to deal with customer and a dick. What say the FFLs? Ever hear of people paying for cans only to discover the dealer never sent in the form and $200 fee? I have . . . . ever hear of dealers selling a can and just hoping the customer gets hit by a bus, because they just stuck the $ in their pocket? Oh - I have. Not say this guy is of that school - but for me, best practice is to handle my own paperwork. |

FWIW we don't normally stock inventory. Instead, we let our customers know about the GemTax event in case they're interested in making a purchase, and we'll place the orders and follow the process Gemtech laid out so that our customer saves the $200. |

Thanks for the replies. I guess it's just my nature to call BULLSHIT and make the SOB admit it's NOT the law.
You all are right - I should have just hung up the phone and moved on. I found someone who not only got a laugh out of th story. They are paying the sales tax on the can! |
