Before I go to my local reloading gear dealer I thought I'd ask a question about other then TAC (If they don't see it) what other powder is good for 223 and 308? The projectiles I bought for the 223 is a 68gr V-max and 62 gr FMJSCBT. The 308 are going to be 168gr BTSP and 145gr FMJBT.
Also is there a powder that can be used on 45,40 and 38spl? If not I'm looking for a good powder for 451 230gr JHP. Thanks |

TAC works great from mid to heavy wt bullets in 223. Varget works from light to heavy. The problem is that Varget is not exactly PM friendly, whereas TAC measures like water! RL15 is great for the heavy wt bullets.
H335 is great for mid wt bullets. H322 is excellent light to mid wt bullets. |

I use both Varget and Tac and shoot hornady's 68hp at mag lenth for accuracy not speed, either powder will shoot sub.75 @ 100yds,in
my gun.. Tac flows better in powder measures and you wont need to compress the charge as you might when useing max varget loads , I also used to use blc(2) which also shot sub .75 but had a higher std. it also flows like water. You need to decide if your going for max vel. for varmints and give up a little accuracy or go for max accuracy and give up some velocity, I have never found that you can get both. for instance one of my match 68gr.loads only chronos at 2770 (varget) and groups sub .7 all day and will hover around .5 on a good day, my PD load cronos at 2880 (varget) and barley holds .9"... still plenty good for varmints. have some friend that got hold of some of the new IMR 8208 and say it looks very good for match loads if your looking for accuracy you could try it..I havent been able to work a load up using it yet as it always sold out. Welcome to the world of reloading |

Welcome to the world of reloading Really I'm looking for is what best can take down a Deer or human size target! I could care less if my 223 shoots sub-MOA as long as it can group a 5 or 10 shots in the a humans chest at 300 yards or more I'm good!! Now the 308 I might want something a little more accurate! I have seen ball FMJ do there job on humans and that's why I picked it as my battle rifle. My BTSP are not going to be for sniping or anything like that there going to be hunting rounds. My FMJ ammo might be used for long shots my STG-58 has shoot a human size target at 1,000 yards(Not by me but a pro with my rifle) So I know for a fact this rifle can do the long range shooting if need be. So I would look more on my everyday carry ammo to maybe make a 600 yard+ shot if need be. |

no problem..I would suggest you try a better hunting bullet than a v-max for deer/large varments at 300yds...I could not find a 68 gr v-max listed on Hornadys site??, they list 60gr as the heavy v-max,try the hornady 70gr SP for deer and my friends swear by a barnes 70gr..work up a safe max load and your good to go..in any case pick a heavy bonded core or A frame 223 for 300 yds and you can't go wrong.
hodgon list 26.0 of varget for a 70 gr. as a max load good for about 3024 fps out of a 24in bbl.... Lymans list a more realistic 2830 for a 20in bbl with a 69 gr bullet start low and work it up..good luck |
| These two powders are alway out of stock at my local gun dealer. I have to request that he hold 3lbs of each when he gets stock. Varget for rifle and TiteGroup for pistol. I use a lot of AA2230 for rifle too. I must be the only guy in town who uses it because I've been buying from the same lot number for the last 4 months. |

VihtaVuori N540 is pretty good for the heavier 223 bullets, but it's expensive. Burns real clean, though. For a powder to run in 45 ACP, 40 S&W, and 38 Special, Win 231 / Hodgdon HP38 would work. Unique and Universal would also both probably work. |

Then again, I scored some IMR 8208 XBR right when it came out. Can't wait to get my rifle scoped and try that out

| Well they had BL-2 so I picked that up and 100 5.56 primes and 100 large rifle primers. They had no large pistol primes told me they have been on back order for 6 months! So I did not pick up any pistol powder wish I would have but could not remember what type to get! Anyway so I guess it's off to pay the $25 fee I think I will make it up as 1000 primers for rifle large or small where $42 for 1000 of them. So with the Wolf brand being about $29 I should make up the extra $25 shipping fee. I also get some large pistol primers with that!! I did buy some CCI 5.56 primers 100 for them and 100 CCI large rifle primers for my 308. |

lots of powder that works well in both 223 and 308: win 748, blc2, aa2460, aa2520, tac, varget, h335, re15, imr4895, there are more but you get the idea. I'm currently using aa2460. +1 Now this guy knows his powders! I have used all of the above in both 223 & 308 except Tac. I currently use AA2520 in both to drive heavier bullets. |
