| Anyone know where i can score some bulk powder for the 50 bmg? |
|
I will no longer by surplus or pulled powder.
Goes back to a post several years ago, the nitrocellulose or such broke dowm, and 'poof' combusted. I had 2 8 # jugs, in the big room behind my house, went to take my GSD out, he went near the powder storage, barking. Jugs were starting to swell, opened one carefully, the fumes about killed me. Was all wet and clumped together. Stupid me just had to touch it and ate a layer or two of skin from thumb and index finger tip, not much longer, would have had a kaboom. Temp. and humidity well controlled. Dogs good nose possibly saved us. And, I would call vendor, and ask, 'is it surplus, never used powder, or powder pulled from loaded rounds. Did NOT get a refund as vendor 'was not responsible for storage conditions', even though these W ere not the only incidents. Space in the W ere was an intenional clue as to who was selling this. http://www.ar15.com/archive/topic.html?b=6&f=3&t=248538 |

Still no luck on powder. Went to a gun show last weekend and only seen one 8lb jug of 5010 pull down powder for $80, i passed. I did pickup 500 primers though. Why? $80 for 5010 is reasonable, especially for a funshow. It's the most reliable tracer ignition powder out there... |

HDhogman,
I like you got taken on some of that Surplus powder stuff. Never catch me buying it any more. I made the mistake of loading some rounds and next spring noted the powder had that brown/orange fumes. I dumped it on the lawn and it burnt the grass. My mistake was to try to shoot the few rounds I still had. Lucky that the bold didnt blow back through receiver. Like you, I prefer to buy new powder and pay some. Than buy something almost half of the cost, but for it to go bad in one year even when stored in a cool dry place. But if I was to buy a surplus 8# jug, I would think that 80 bucks is not a bad price. |

HDhogman, I like you got taken on some of that Surplus powder stuff. Never catch me buying it any more... The scary thing is the only powder I've ever gotten which went bad was a 1-Lb can of NEW Hodgen powder I bought from a local gun store. I've bought over a thousand pounds of surplus powder through the years from Pat's, Hi-Tech and a little from Bartlett too. My "test" for rounds I've loaded: Occasionally open the can and take a whiff. It should smell like ether (God it smells good!) The Hodgen that went bad was bad in the container and went no further than that! It wound up in a ziplock bag with a bag of Tannerite wrapped around it. At least I got my money's worth out of it! I did get some crappy ammo from TNW (loaded) years ago... It didn't pass the "sniff test", and when I pulled it down it was not good. The "sniff test": Good for other things than just nookie.

Sorry others had problems, more than Just I, and the poster I referenced.
When I get caught up will hit the archives and locate the post where there was an actual detonation of powdwer, if I already havent. Even when I shoot ammo I havve loaded for awhile, like to let it warm up and give it the 'shake and listen test, every round.' Only takes 1 bad one. |
