I am looking for a poncho of good quality (not plastic) that I could use also as a tarp/tent, something of good quality that would fit over me and my pack and could serve as a lean-to tent, it would be GREAT if there was something in Multicam |
| The USGI poncho is hard to beat. I used one on a winter campout as a tarp shelter and had no trouble with it holdin up to the weight of snow and the light wind. If you want a really nice but pricey poncho, look at the Sil ponchos. Check them out on www.backpackinglight.com or just google them. Not multi-cam but as light as they come. Brigade Quartermasters may have a multi-cam poncho for you though. |
| They're harder to find, but the older version US Army poncho - heavier, rubberized material, OD green in color, and smells like piss/puke in a can... they're good to go. Much more water resistant - to the point of acutually being water-proof, but weigh more. You can actually use them as an improvised litter without fear of it tearing down the middle! Maybe you could find them in military surplus stores.... |

ok, so I bought a "new" poncho from flea bay and it was listed as new...it was actually new old stock so once I go it out of the package the neck area cracked and peeled, the rest of it looks great and would hold up well, but the neck area cracked just from being old and stored away. My question is this. Is there anything I can do to re-coat the neck area to be water tight again? Thanks Rick |
Depending on how big the tear is you could try some kind of vinyl repair kit or nylon tent repair kit. |

I have a 3 or 4 of the lighter Rip Stop Nylon and then 2 of the heavier Rubber coated fabric. For repairs like you have posted get some Tent Seam Sealer and paint it on over the damaged area. Mine wear New or like new but still the water proofing around the neck had a whitesh look to it and was a bit brittle. The Tent Seam Sealer will just seal the crackered area and you should be good to go. Karsten |
