I think I finally used all available rail space for practical uses, might have to go back to the Block II CQBR setup I had before just to make everything fit...

Same laser....

Now I feel like I need two lasers; 1 for the Scar and states where suppressors are legal, and another for the AR and non-suppressor states (primary shooting area, family farm in Iowa). REALLY need to shorten the barrel on the scar; current set up is just a tad heavy. That and it looks a lot cooler on the AR

Got my DBAL-I2 from the TNVC sale and am trying to figure out how to best set it up given my current equipment. I initially had it further back and had the pressure switch on the lower portion of the rail in the 4-5oclock position. had trouble activating both laser and light at the same time. i really want to be able to activate both at the same time, but i don't think thats going to be possible. So i just moved it further out in front and was wondering what you guys thought of this set-up. I'm mainly concerned with how you guys think the DBAL with do being that close to the brake. I mostly run with the can ON, but i do sometimes tai it off.

Thanks for any tips

Its a dual switch that will work with both, but it's still impossible to use both at the same time with your thumb. It's also impossible unless you have a Surefire. I have one and have no use for it as it provides no constant on for the light.

Clayvt, a better bet would be to put the tapeswitch where your support hand's fingers are. The very first post of the thread shows this. I have a scout light I can activate with my thumb, and simultatiously activate the laser with the fingers of the same hand. Much better to me than balancing 2 closely placed switches with one thumb.

Also running flip up irons further back. They aren't that bad considering you are getting the same length as many smaller SBRs

I did, but my thumb blocks/comes very close to the IR beam causing sparkling. I'll post some new pics later, but I got it sorted out. Put the tape switch at my support fingers.

No. it doesn't with the IR. The camera picked up some with the visible laser, but it's camera induced lens flair.

This thread is awesome, really like seeing all the different set-up methods.

I was looking at purchasing an IR laser and had a quick question concerning mounting position. Is there a functional difference to mounting the laser further back as opposed to keeping it out towards to the muzzle? I would think mounting it closer to the receiver would be best for balance purposes but others I have spoken to have said it is not optimal. In the short amount of time I had a PEQ-2 mounted to my M16, I was instructed by my unit armorer to mount it as far forward as possible. When I asked why, the only reason he could give was that "the manual says so." Actually got yelled at when he caught me with it mounted at the back of the rail. I'm sort of a small guy and I also had a 203 mounted at the time, so aiming the rifle felt like doing curls. Then again this is also the same guy that told me the PEQ-2 was only effective out to 40 meters so I was somewhat skeptical to begin with.

Does anyone have any insight into this issue? Is it all about preference or is there really an optimal mounting position?

There's a thread over on TOS that explains why forward mounting is preferable. There's optical alignment issues, as well as keeping the laser free of anything that it could reflect off of.

Rear mounting the laser is an ergonomic compromise for those taht shoot with a forward grip.

Here's the trick with this set up. You move your thumb after you press twice.

It stays on.

That's it.

I've had this DBAL combination at just about every position on the rail and where has it been the longest? Where it is now. The balance of the rifle and accessibility of what I need to get to instinctively is what makes this the best arrangement in this situation. I hate that rail for no other reason than it's only 10"s. Screw Troy too. DD can suck it now also because I was going to get a RISII M4A1.

It's a journey. I'm not committed to anything other than what works the absolutely best for me right now. I hopefully get smarter. My gear gets better. It's never stops.

Here's some pic's from said trip.

The day I got my DBAL. It came with the Doctor. One pic for shits than split up.

Forward on rail at 12 o'clock. It was ok but not intuitive finding the pressure pad on the left side.

DBAL left side. PITA remembering with adjustments which way went where. Off set was not a problem. Probably my second favorite set up. There is no laser on right and light on left option as the SF takes up too much support side real estate.

Current set up. Having all the weight shifted to the rear makes a huge difference with perceived weight. Over the top hold only affects the IR laser operation. I always activate IR constant On at the box. Surefire IR light also constant On via dual tail cap. There's nothing compromised. Visible green laser and white light I use the dual pressure pad for momentary activation.

Picked up an EOTECH/Samson-Mfg FTS including an PVS14 adapter for $25 shipped of the EE. Too good of a deal to pass up.

I'm converting the threaded bolt on the adapter ring that clamps to the PVS lock ring to a knurled thumb wheel so I can loosen that by hand... slide in/out the PVS for IR zeroing / familiarization and then in swap a daytime 3X magnifier.

This all will likely be replaced with the Aimpoint twist mount and TNVC's TM14 mount but it's been fun to play with.

New rail and magnifier.

Got more room to move around
Link Posted: 3/6/2014 6:37:55 PM EDT

The light and pressure pad rails are both polymer. The fore grip and CQD rails are aluminum.

Not shown, the Aimpoint 3X came with an LFU lens attachment. It turns everything pink looking and it completely filters out the the green visible laser of the DBAL. Is why it's not shown.

I added the Haley Strategic Mil620 mount and replaced the huge SF Millennium tailcap with a China cap and soldered it into circuit with my Surefire double remote. It's pretty compact but I bet a Unity/Scout setup would be even better

Decided I wanted to try another config. since getting the new rail. Running the pressure pad at 12:00 behind the DBAL & with no stubby VFG lets me lose two removable rail sections. Feels pretty good in terms of balance, pressure pad placement and overall weight. Incidentally, added a Firefly beacon to the PT helmet and upgraded the grip to a mod 3.

Here's a TTP you may find helpful. I store 123's in the pistol grip since the DBAL will eat them if I leave them in accidentally or if the 952V happens to run dry. I use two small "ranger" bands" to insulate and sound proof them. The band goes on the pistol grip or VFG if present to show hot laser. No more dead batteries either since you can tell from sight if a battery is in.

On the SF dual pressure pad the light was the forward button position and the laser was the rear but it's the opposite now so that'll be a few hundred presentations to get that sorted out again. The Aimpoint 3X comes off when the NVGs come out but I have found that I can still use it as a 3X magnifier holding it out in front of the PVS14. You have to refocus first but it does work very well. I'd like to find a black 30mm locking gate clamp to hold the two together for hand held scanning from a static position.
