Ran across a problem trying to determine my Remington 700P's in .308 OAL, and was hoping you guys could help.
I bought myself a Sinclair Seating Depth Gage, and followed the directions to a tee, I think. Step #1 Using a sierra 168gr Matchking bullet, I measured 1.212" insert bullet into chamber. Step #2 Insert rod and stop w/guide, slide stop down (facing the right way, per directions) and lock in Step#3 remove bullet, insert fired case, slide on other stop (again facing correctly) on rod , insert, slide down and lock. Step #4 pull rod and mic on correct stop steps. 1.774" Step #5 add these measurements together, 1.774" + the 1.212" = 2.986" OAL Problem is when using my lapua brass trimmed at 2.006 and seat the bullet to a OAL of 2.986" (the dummy round) that leaves right at .232" in the neck and the boat tail accounts for some. (bullet just about falls out) I inserted in rifle and it chambers and bolt closes just fine, but it is not seated deep enough into the neck to hold the bullet in place. this is very accurate shooting rifle with less than about 300 rounds through it. Is this typical for the OAL of a .308 Sorry for the long read, but I wanted to give as much info as I could. So whats going on here, Or am I just brain dead here. |

But surely this cannot be throat erosion after only so little shooting through the barrel must be just a whacked out long throat.
I cant see how I can ever achieve getting to seat agaist the lands or close for that matter. Wonder if that would fly by the old lady, honey I need a new barrel, the internet guys said my barrel was bad. lol Kidding to the side, it is a very accurate rifle so I will shoot it till it isn't anymore |

Just about every factory rifle has obnoxious long throats now; there ought to be a law. So, you should be surprised when you hit the lands with a late off the rack factory rifle, and you shouldn't be surprised if the bullet does fall out of the case before hitting the rifling.
Estimate about 0.001 inches of throat erosion per 100 rounds fired. |
