I'm a new C&R collector and notice instructions sent with the rifle state that it needs a through cleaning (no problem there), AND that it should be checked out by a gunsmith before shooting.  Is that true of all mil surplus firearms?  hinking.gif

You are buying a used arm.  Basically it is CYA by the person who sold it- not new, so they can't 100% guarantee it will work and be safe.

What type of rifle did you get?

I have an Enfield #1 Mk 3 from AIM and a 98 k  mauser from Empire Arms.  Both need to be totally taken apart and cleaned but look really nice otherwise.  They are still kind of stickey but I bought a small steamer to help remove the cosmolene in the stocks.  What do I need to look for in a Mil Surplus rifle?  Do I need to check the headspace?  Does that require a different one for each caliber?  Thanks......

You need to also look around the receiver and check for obvious cracks and holes drilled in the barrel.  Found a couple that failed this test.
