Has anyone seen or have opinions on the new Springfield M1A with the 16" barrel and composite stock?  I heard about it in the Jan issue of Guns and Ammo.

i guess i have to ask myself what would i want to do with it.
clear rooms?  it's got a minor penetration problem for that.
25-300 yd stuff.  yea it's a valid option. but i would go M1A NM or AR10 first.

kick around truck gun.  it's kind of expensive for that.  but i sure would be cool!

how about operate in sandy environments where the "10" will jam.  yea i could go with that.

"coopers" scout rifle.  a bit heavy but it fills the bill.

i think it's one more thing to put in the gun safe.  i would rather have a full length M1A NM and a shorty AR (and i do) than that rifle but some might find it the cat's meow.

Is the barrel shorter than the Bush rifle, or is the overall length just shorter because there's no flash supressor on the end?  Hard to get the scale from the photo and the rifle looks pretty normal out the gas block.

I'm trying to figure where the 2" came out, the stock and handguard looks stock in the photo.

Im thinking the barrel must end at the 1st band.

Id like to see the thing up close.  Thats going to have a serious effect on gas system.

If the stock is standard length I'm not seeing any decrease in overall length since there's no flash hider on it that I can see.  The latest Crane NWS-contract Vortex is barely shorter than the original.

But will I be able to switch the flash supressor for one with a lug and put a bayonet on it after the AWB sunsets?

You gotta pull the bayonet lug even on the 18"
Bush barrel so you can access (and service) the gas cylinder plug.

This photo should show why.

It looks like the SOCOM has a shorter gas cylinder than the standard or scout.

So who's selling the parts for conversion?

Having owned an 18" SA M1A for some time, i got one thing to say about the 16" version.

I'll bet that sucker's loud.  Real loud.
