| Looking to buy a new folder and need some help. Not sure whats avalible? I have about $300 to spend and would like something fairly HD with a 3.5" to 4" blade, assisted opening, must have a pocket clip and can be carried "hinge up". I'm looking at a ZT 0301 but really don't know much about knives so please help! Thanks...gunner-g |
| Personally I'd buy a Benchmade and spend $100 on beer before I bought the ZT0301. ZT knives just seem way bulkier than necessary to me, but YMMV. On top of that, the 0301 has a recurve blade, so it would be harder to sharpen without offering any advantage (for me) over a differently profiled blade. |

I have an ultra tek sharpmaker diamand rod and I think sharpening my ZT 0350 is easier than using a stone. Don't let a recurve blade scare you away from a great knife. |

Yeah, I don't want anyone to think I'm saying they're useless pieces of shit or anything. I handled one in a local store expecting to purchase it based on the feedback here, but it just wasn't for me. |
| Are you sure you need open assist you are really limiting yourself with that requirement I own several Benchmades that will easily open with a snap of the wrist. I also own a few open assist kinves, but I usually prefer the non assisted because they are so much slimmer. |

I don't have any assisted opening knives and was looking to get one. Thats all. I don't have alot of knives but I use the ones I have. Except for a older Microtech SOCOM model that I never carry due to the pocket clip being mounted so low on the knife body that about 1/3 of the knife sticks out of my pocket and I'm afraid I'll loose it. So please fire away with your recommendations. And thanks for all the good advice so far |

If it were me I'd get the ZT 0560 or 0561
I absolutely love mine. I think its damn near the perfect knife. A little bulky though for all applications. BUT for $300 you can own a ZT 0560/0561 AND buy it's little Hinderer designed cousin - the Kershaw Cryo. Also, in that price range, I am a HUGE fan of emerson knives as well. There is TONS of selection in your price range / requirements but I'd go for a CQC-15 if it were me. |

Like mentioned the 300 or 350 for $120. The newer ZT 560/561 and 550/551 are getting tons of good reviews everywhere as well. I wouldn't rule these out just because they didn't have an assist. If your set on spending the money, I might look at the 561 if you like flippers or the 550 if you like a thumb stud.
For me, it's a Blur. Plain non tanto blade. Strong and I can beat the piss out of it and not feel like I'm loosing money in an investment. I think I have a dozen Kershaw knives that get carried some. But the Blur is my bitch. |

my only thing with the 0560/0561 is how it carries. While it is surprisingly comfortable to carry for such a large knife, the deep carry clip makes it "bottom out" in some pockets. I purchased an aftermarket clip for it and while that helps, its still a big knife to carry all the time.
The 0550, however, carries much better in my opinion. And while its not a flipper, it still deploys plenty fast for my liking. Plus it just feels like a freaking TANK. I've never had a more solid feeling knife. That is one massive chunk of titanium on that thing. I love both of them, but if I had to choose just one to carry, it would most likely be my 0550. But having said that I don't think I could get rid of my 0561 either. Both are too nice to get rid of. ALSO - if you get a 0550 I highly recommend the G10 Frag Grips that are sold at monkey edge. I have the brown ones on mine and I love 'em. Really comfy, look good, and a bonus I didn't think of was it doesn't rub the back of your hand as much as the stock G10 grips when you're reaching in and out of your pocket. |
