I want to order something like this

http://www.use-enco.com/CGI/INSRIT?PMAKA=356-3215&PMPXNO=943270&PARTPG=INLMK32

and a holder for it.

There are so many different grades and styles, that I'm completely lost.

What would you buy for cutting steel and aluminum on your lathe?

I just use carbide tipped cutters for everything.

Try ordering some of these, in the styles you need.

I see that you stumbled onto the TT-321 carbide inserts (love to use them since they are not a arm and a leg for inserts).

Here is a better price on them.
http://toolinghouse.com/tt321.aspx.

Tool holder sets here in 1/2" shank and larger (but if you check around, may find a less expensive set),
http://www.billstoolcrib.com/Toolset5Pc.htm

C2: Uncoated grade used primarily in mild cutting conditions.  Used for turning and milling steel, cast iron and other non-ferrous metals.
C5: For roughing to semi-finishing of Steel.

But to add, they are not the end all of tools/cutters.  A sharpened HSS cutter will give you a better finish cut, and lets face it, sometimes you need to have a very sharp edge, and an carbide insert cutter is never going to give you such due to the slight radius end  of the cutter.

Thanks Dano523.

That's exactly what I needed. I didn't want to end up with cutters and holders that wouldn't work together.

Always, and I mean always, shop the insert first for price, then work the angle back for the needed holders afterwords.

Take parting cut off insert tools,

The inserts for the 19-2 blade (3/4" high, and will have a working depth of 1/ 1/2") are only $2.95 for C-5's, and if you work it right, can pick up a less inexpensive tool holder for the size holder you pick up with a HSS cutter on the cheap (say in the case of needing a QCTP holder),

When compared to a Glanze cut off tool with the inserts around $10 a shot, even the Shars full cut off grooving kits with 1/2" conventional holder are not badly priced (if you are not running a QCTP)  since they come with 10 inserts to start with.

For my toolroom lathe I use DCMT inserts on a 3/4" tool holder, on an Aloris axa tool post.

For steel I just use a standard grade carbide. For aluminum I use a DCGT, which is a ground insert. (very sharp)
