There was a thread the other day where making sizing lube was mentioned and I can't find it now.

IIRC, someone was having difficulty locating 99% Iso. alcohol and someone suggested a farm store.

I just went to town to the Farm store and looked about a bit, I came away with a gallon of 99% Iso. alcohol for a few pennies over $6 bucks.

The health store has Liquid Lanolin for like $7 bucks, had that.

Here is how I do my mixing. Heating the stuff on the stove scares the shit outta me. So, I took the wifes candle warmer and heat mine with enough alcohol to thin it, then mix in the rest. It's usually 1 ounce of liquid lanolin to 14 ounces of 99% Iso. alcohol and i shake it up.

The candle warmer heats to 120 degrees F by my fancy point and click thermometer. Then it's into a spray bottle. Been using this for a bit over 3500 cases and it works fine. I also used it some on the skin graft on my right leg, keeps it soft.

This works for me.

Great idea with the candle warmer.

Stovetop heating makes me nervous.  Using the wife's candle warmer makes me nervous too.

How much lube does that make, and about how many rounds can you lube using it?

I have a 4oz of oil which cost $4 that is rediculously slippery and i have lubed 1200+ rounds with it and i've used at most .1oz, as I only need about 10 drops per 1 gallon baggy of brass.

4 ounces of lanolin in the bottle and if I were to mix it all I'd add 56 ounces of alcohol to it to use up the 4 ounce bottle. I'd have 60 ounces mixed. I can't tell how many that would do cause I've used allot on my burn in since Feb. I'll say that it lasts a good while.

last I mixed, started out with 1 ounce lanolin to 10 ounces alcohol and kept adding alcohol in 1/2 ounce increments until all the lanolin stayed in suspension, happened for me at 1 ounce lanolin to 14 ounces of alcohol. Looks just like the Lube from Frankford Arsenal (Midway).

The ratio I use is 5:1

I use 5 parts Isopropy Alcohol 99% to 1 part Liquid Lanolin

I heat water up to 110-120F and place the Lanolin bottle into the heated water.

I measure, mix and let cool.  It works great and is much cheaper in the long run than buying commercial lube.

It is cheaper than buying lube I will say, although a note of caution here. If you want to warm up the liquids, first thing is that no open flames around the alcohol and if you have a gas stove then skip the stove.  What you can do is get a pot fill it with water and heat the water up. After the water is warm enough for your liking then turn the stove off and set the bottle of liquid you want to warm into the water untill it reaches the desired temp.

Then mix to your hearts content, to store the lube make sure that a storage container is air tight or the alcohol will evaporate when you dont want it to. Other than that happy sizing.

I mixed my first batch a few weeks ago.  Used a 1:10 ratio of lanolin to 99% alcohol by volume.  No heating at all but it was a 90+ day so that may factor.  Anyway I mixed straight from the bottles into the spray bottle and shook it well.  As of this post there is not any separation that I can see...

I did read the post even using my glasses, I do not happen to have a candle warmer, not to mention a cup warmer (for ones like coffee cups). Granted the 99% doesnt really need to be warmed up but I figure it couldn't hurt. I have a stove (electric) and used to have a gas stove.  The part you highlighted in red was for people that have a gas stove and not a heat plate. Basically that part was a PSA for safety, kind of like the warnings on hair dryers saying "do not use while bathing".
