I have a Mossberg 835 Ulti Mag that needs a magazine plug before I go dove hunting.
Will a piece of PVC conduit work or does it need to be something solid?

1/2 inch wood dowel rod is what I have used.  It fits inside the spring and allows the spring to slide over it smoothly . I am not sure what length you need for an 835 but I would try 7and 1/2 inches .

I'd say wood dowel would be good. You need to be able to fit it inside the spring, and it has to be small enough not to interfere with the springs movement.

Length....I'd experiment. Cut it longer that you need and work your way down: you can always cut more off, you cant put it back on. Some simple math should get you very close to the finished length though.

And that being said, I don't think you need a mag plug for doves- at least up here, not sure about Texas. Usually it is for migratory birds, like ducks and geese. Look into it.  ETA: After some googling, looks like you have to plug the mag for doves, didn't realize they were migratory. I usually only go turkey and pheasant hunting, so I'm not as famaliar with other game. I don't have to plug my mag for either of those types of bird(not that I'd need more than 3 shots).

Hell, never mind. I have not shot this shotgun yet and it's showing.
I  just checked- it comes with a plug in the mag.
Thanks for the help,
