I've got an 870 Magnum, blued with wood. Police surplus, runs like a champ. I've run into one problem during the last two outings, and need some thoughts. The gun is 6+1, so I'll load 6 in the tube, and chamber a round. When I try to insert the last round to top off the tube, I can't get the shell in further than 1/4". The action is completely closed when this happens, so it's not a lock-up issue, so far as I can tell. Pushing the last loaded shell with my finger does nothing; it won't budge. After unloading and trying again, it works. This happens about every 4th time I go to load 6+1. Any ideas what's causing it to hang up? Thanks for any and all help! |

Check for a burr in the magazine tube or on the follower if it's metal. I've never seen a spring cause this problem but take a close look at it anyway... could be an after market, under size or just plain wrong spring bunching up and binding as it compresses. John |

Yeah, it sounds like something's going on in your mag tube, or with the follower - maybe it had the dimples removed for an extended mag, and the problem is in that area??? I'd check the mag tube and follower for a potential problem, and make sure you have the right spring in there(least likely possibility - given your description of the problem, IMO)... One last thing: although you shouldn't have to, you *could* chamber a round, THEN fill your mag... - georgestrings |

If you have a Remington factory magazine extension, the extension tube might be misaligned. Remove the clamp and unscrew the extension. Inspect the gun's magazine tube, the spring, the follower, and the extension for damage, burrs, or deformation. Inspect the mouth of both the gun's magazine and the extension for burrs or bent, squashed edges. Install the follower and spring, then screw the extension into the coupling until the extension JUST contacts the gun's magazine tube. If the extension isn't screwed in until it makes contact, there'll be a gap that can catch shells or followers. If the extension is screwed in too tight, this can cause the extension and the gun's magazine tube to misalign causing the shells or follower to catch. When screwing the extension in, check for an extension that's bent out of line. Remember, on Police guns, the boys on the night watch do weird things to shotguns that can cause all kinds of problems. |
Thanks guys, all very helpful. I think the prize may go to dfariswheel on this one; it's a remington factory extension that my buddy reattached the last time we cleaned guns. I'll still check for burrs if it's not an allignment issue. Thanks again. |
