I picked up my K 31 from my local dealer today to find a very nice rifle with a rust problem. There are spots of rust covering all of the metal surfaces on the rifle, as well as the internals. I want to keep all of the finish as it is but remove the rust, is there any way to do this without steel wool? What are your tips and tricks? Now I know what cosmoline is for, this is a pain.

Pics would help along with a description...(surface rust, penetrating rust, etc.)

If it's just surface rust, removal with fine steel wool and a very light touch coupled with some Ballistol, CLP, or WD-40 should get it all off.

+1 if it's surface rust.

This is why I love it when I get one covered in cosmo.

I'd try a rag soaked with oil or tranny fluid first.  then brass wool, then the steel wool if needed.

Its mostly surface rust, but there is some penitrating rust in some parts. The majority of the rust is just small spots spread over the rifle about the size if the tip of a pen.

This is rather common for a blued gun,why I hate buling with a passion.

My K-31 is getting duracoat or parked, the hell with "keep it original",of course if you just take it to the range and are very careful with cleaning and oiling you'll be fine.

If you want to use the thing you're in for a time and a lot of hair pulling,I've been there it ain't pretty

Ya I figured as much but I enjoy the work. What did you do in your situation?

If it's just slight rust very fine steel wool will take it off and not touch the bluing, rub softly, oil,if you want to keep the blue after taking the rust off I'd suggest a Sentry Tuff Cloth-it'll keep rust off for almost a month, recoat it everytime you touch it and it'll keep forever.

If you want a solution look at flat black paint i.e. duracoat as it'll wash off and you can go back to "original" easy.

Pitted? deep rust? you're screwed, just get it off and reblue (and I've been there...too many times)
