I just picked up my new Gemtech Halo from Silencer Shop today and this is what I found when I opened the box.
Is this what the finish is supposed to look like?

I'll go out on a limb and say that is not normal.  Did you not open it while at silencer shop?  I'm sure they would help in sending it back for a refinish or resolving it some other way.

No.  It was wrapped in plastic.  It was not opened until it got home.  I will be taking it back to the store first thing tomorrow.

Does the S/N match the box / Form 4?

I can't tell - is that rust or Krylon?

The s/n matches.  It has an oily preservative on it but the discoloration is in the metal.

Never buy sight unseen. Always open the plastic, make sure threads/end caps etc are what you're paying for. Sucks being stuck with a suppressor.

Damn, that's messed up.  I can't believe no one at SS caught that the whole time it was in their shop.  Or more appropriately, how it got out of Gemtech looking like that.

A bad coating maybe, possibly rusted while waiting for the stamp to come in. I don't know, just taking a stab at it. Seems like I've read about that happening before and the manufacturer had it shipped back to them and refinished it.

The other part looks like what I would expect it to look like.

I would guess improper material prep. prior to the Cerakote. Properly applied, I have had Cerakote stand up to a lot of abuse. Sorry for your downer on what should have been a good day.

Custom painted?

That thing looks like it belongs on a surplus AK-patterned rifle.

That sucks. Should just be an easy recoating though. It's weird that it didn't get opened before you left the store. You think that would happen if even just to verify the SN#.

Looks like the Cerakote came off in those areas. It won't affect function, but given the cost and process involved in getting a suppressor, I would not be happy with that.

Don't know if you're the only one...but it's showing up just fine to most of us.

Probably was fine when it left gemtech. Discoloration is not uncommon as silencer sit in varying environmental controls.

I imagine if you put yours in a damp plastic bag for a few months you could achieve that look too!

I feel your pain buddy, I got in a new Halo GM and found the same thing.  Posted in the Gemtech section and got this single answer, haven't gotten a second response.  Since then I've had my can Cerakoted black.

Here is response...

The suppressor is built from series 300 stainless steel, which is highly corrosion resistant. Black oxide is a controlled anaerobic rusting process. The vast majority of the time, series 300 stainless can be finished with a special process for black oxide, but occasionally it is not durable for reasons unknown to us. When packaged in the plastic sleeve (at the time of marking), the finish appeared to be fine. However, sometimes it rubs off. When this happens, we coat the unit with black high temperature Cerakote.

If desired, we will be happy to Cerakote this suppressor for you. Turnaround runs about 2 weeks. Please contact technical support for the process of getting an RMA and a UPS call tag. (208) 939-7222 #3 or <[email protected]>

From Industry Fourm

eta I had a co-worker cerakote the can, not gonna send it back to Gemtech which may get screwed it up again.  The can looks 100% better and is holding up every well.

since a picture can be misleading, try to clean it up with some gun oil and a nylon brush. to me it looks like it could be dry oil, rust, or the thing was shot and got very hot. Like I said pic can be misleading. the two last ones can't be because it is new

Being NIB, I would be alittle annoyed OP. Silencershop (and you) should have checked the inventory. That being said, I would go buy some high temp grille paint and spray that can. Put a ear plug in the front endcap and attach the can to ur rifle tight. Wrap your rifle barrel if you don't want it painted. But that is just me. I paint (and repaint) all my cans. .

Sucks, but I would let it go and enjoy it.  Looks cool, actually, and it will return to this condition soon enough.

Just don't see this worth the month it'll take to make it look temporarily new...

UPDATE: Gemtech is having Silencer Shop ship them the HALO back to have Cerakoted. They have also agreed to to it in a custom color for me to make up for this. Silencer Shop, in addition to covering all the shipping costs, is pitching in a carry case. This should have never happened in the first place but, hats off to both companies for making it right.

Please tell me it's either going to be Tiffany Blue or some form of purple/pink.

Why is SS sending it back when according to your post, it has now been transferred to you ("I just picked up my new Gemtech Halo from Silencer Shop today")?

They are sending it back to be "repaired".

My point was you can send it back to be "repaired" and Gemtech can send it to you, avoiding the middleman and having to go to/from SS to drop off and pickup.

They already had it and will ship it back to me when it comes back.  No big deal.
