I thought there were more machinists in GD.

6000RPM tapping is cool.

Not many machinists here either I guess.
Well I don't care. I will keep this thread alive until the start of the show if I have to.

I am a one man shop, and I really like getting out and seeing the new machines and tooling.
I also like to look at all the different ways that the vendors are fixturing parts.
I've gotten several ideas from going to the show in years past, that I've been able to bring back and use in my shop.

I'll watch the videos later.

One of the guys from work, an ex tool and die guy, and a member here is up there this week.  He tells me to figure out someway to justify a sponsored trip up there next year.

Years ago there was a similar show in St. Louis and I always hope we'll see another one but I shouldn't hold my breath, that's probably viewed as too icky 'round here.

For a couple of years at work now I've been advocating more complicated machined parts that eliminate assembly of machined details.  For a long time we've been hide bound to manufacture flat details, preferably machined on one side.  That sort of works okay in airframes, but the subsystem equipment suffers hard from that approach.

On the other hand, I'm working on an assembly now that requires reaching under a flange with the head in order to remove excess material, and I'm anxious to watch it in action.

Nice.

I laughed at the tapping comment.  We have a vendor that I wish would stop breaking threading tools inside the holes.  Fortunately I haven't needed to scrap a part, but I came close with one that had about a third of the threaded length boogered up.

Wish I could go. But too dang busy making parts... The last month has been stupid busy with barrel thread job orders. Bunch of hunting newbs go buy a big magnum cartridge bolt gun, then shoot it once and realize that it kicks like a mule, then they call me...

We were too busy this year.  I had 10 guys lined up to go and had to cancel the whole thing.  We're so far behind it's not even funny.  Having a turning center broke down for the month prior didn't help.

On the plus side, I don't know if I needed to go this year.  Purchased in the last 12 months:

-2 new VF5-50s
-1 new VF6-50
-1 new ST-40 live tool
-1 new DMG CTX 800 live tool sub spindle
-1 new Okuma MCR AC5 II (200"x100")
-1 new Bystronic 6kw fiber laser

Yeah this has been my biggest year for capital equipment expenditure.

I did an image search of your Bystronic 6kw fiber laser, holy cow. That thing looks like a subway car. Good luck and stay busy

I hope we do.  I'm actually worried that this current backlog is a rush that will end with the calendar year, leaving us all ramped up and looking for work, but, we'll see.
