Im wanting to do some long range deer hunting this season now that ive become a confident 600 yrd shooter and since hornady is the only manual i have and cant find one on berger I'm wanting to know the best bullet hornady offers that will get me long range aacuracy as well as leathality...am i able to hunt with there A-max rounds?? I've always wanted to try bergers VLD hunting bullets but cant find any data on how much powder to use (I'm a varget fan) and i dont hav anything that will measure the velocity so i dont end up using to much powder or anything...any help on that?? thanks
Oh and im shooting a GAP rock in .308

Hunting deer with bullets designed for target shooting is a pretty bad idea.

Your #1 concern as a hunter should be the humane killing of your game.   Target bullets aren't designed to perform like a hunting bullet once they hit flesh.

right i didnt think that a-max's would be a good idea...would there interbonds though hold its accuracy for long ranges or should i just go ahead and switch to a different brand all together?

The best Hornady bullet for hunting, range, and leathality is the SST hands down! Great BC and expansion is great. Ihave customers I havemade ammo for using the SST and they swear by them. One customr took a deer and 475 yards. One shot, and dopped on the spot.

Edit: To address the A-Max and other match grade bullets. Bad idea. Match grade bullets are designed and made with very thin jackets. On impact with and animal the bullet disintigrates. I am not saying people have not used them t kill animals. Bullet retention is a good thing if you intend to eat the aanimal.

I think, for the most part, the Sierra gamekings are pretty accurate.   If you can't find a Hornady game bullet that your rifle likes, maybe that's the next place to look.

Barnes Tipped TSX & MRX bullets are certainly worth looking into, especially since you'll want maximum weight retention at the ranges you're talking about.  Their BCs compare favorably with Sierra's offerings as well.

For Hornady use the SST, not the A-MAX.  The A-MAX is a target bullet and performance on game is unpredictable, the SST is an interlock design and will hold together at any 30-06 velocity.

Shooting a deer at 600 yards with a bullet that is carrying less than 300 ft-lbs. of energy is irresponsible.

First, I would say that for 99.9% of us mortals, shooting at a deer with ANYTHING from 600 yards is unethical and is an unrealistic expectation.  That said, the OP did not say that he intended to shoot deer out to 600 yds.  He simply said that he shoots well out to 600 yards.

Second, he said that he is shooting a .308, which can still hold very close to 1000 ft-lbs of energy at 600 yards.

To the OP, I don't know how far you really intend on shooting when hunting.  Most of us would probably think of 300 yards being the farthest shot we might ever take.  Heck, for most places where I hunt a 300 yard shot would be pretty hard to come by.

I've taken them DRT at 300yrd with a 30-06 and Remington 150gr Cor-Loks from a bow stand using 2 sticks tied together for a rest...
Standard Savage 110 with a duplex-reticle 3-9x32. That said, i wouldn't take shots further than that without better optics (something with hold-over) and ammo (prolly a TSX load) and practice at those ranges.  A top-of-shoulder POA = lungs at 300yrd with a 200 yrd zero with this rifle/ammo.

Apologies to the OP.  I should wait until I've finished my first cup of coffee before posting in the morning.  I didn't see the .308 part.

600 yards is still a very difficult shot to pull off humanely with a .308, but maybe the OP doesn't intend to try that.

Well i Live and hunt western nebraska where is canyons and VERY open and in many of the areas on the familys ranch ranges can easily extend to 600 yrds however i intend on only shooting a deer out to 500...longrangestore.com has a very effective ballistic table that you can input your info on your loads and according to it i will hold over 1000ft-lbs of energy out to 600...the table is very correct on velocities, energy, and adjustments for wind and elevation..strongly recommend for those who are a bit lazy or dont have all the tools needed...
