Is there anything special I need to do with regards to storage for the silver-tipped armor piercing incendiary ammo? I picked up a few cartridges and I don't know if I can just toss them into the ammo can, or if I need to put them in a separate container or keep them outside/buried in a hole in the backyard. Will these things corrode or break down over time to expose the incendiary material? Are they dangerous to keep for long periods I had planned on shooting them off but with the current prices and current events I'll probably hang onto them for some time to come. |

I wouldn't store them under a operating hammer press, under a cliff that has the potential for falling boulders, and I definitely wouldn't let the kids try the Bugs Bunny job of testing for duds with a mallet. Seriously though, the incendiary material is sandwiched between the jacket and the AP slug, so nothing will get to it without the jacket being compromised or something seriously crushing it. I have seen API rounds fired into relatively soft material and the incendiary material not detonating, so unless you do something like listed above, you will not set them off. I watched an entire belt of API get run over by a M1 tank and none of the rounds detonated, so your typical storage techniques will be fine. |
No, put them in my closet. I would store them in something marked - if you only have a couple, perhaps pick up a plastic ammo case for that number of rounds. Mark it well, to keep them easy to track. ETA: when you do go to shoot them off, please be aware of the extreme fire danger they pose. Seriously, I've stopped shooting tracer/API/APIT/whatever rounds because it seems they set everything on fire. It's almost like they're designed to do that! |
