| How quiet are .22 LR subsonic rounds? |
In a pistol, most standard 22lr is subsonic. In my P22 it does not matter what ammo I use, it all stays sub-sonic and works in the suppressor. With the rifle, I better have sub-sonics. In a pistol there is just a slight tone difference, but that is about it. |

I can personally say that Kolibri .22 subs are very, very quiet out of a remington 597, but they have (obviously) very little power. If you hang up a t-shirt and support it from top and bottom (haven't tried just top), and you shoot it from as little as 3 or 4 yards, it will literally bounce off. ETA: it helped to hold the bolt closed, because it would only partially cycle, and so holding the bolt closed could force a little more gas down the barrel. The difference wasn't a whole lot, but it was noticable |

CCI CB caps are about as quiet as a pellet gun out of a bolt action romanian trainer. Thats what I shoot out on my deck.(I live right next to a kennel and it doesnt get the dogs barking like std .22lr.) I tried them in my trailside and they were noticeably louder. |

If you want a gun that is both quiet and accurate, you either need to fill out the paperwork and shell out the money for a can, or you need to shell out the money for a good airgun. CCI CB longs are indeed quiet, but their accuracy sucks and they're the best CB round I know of. I wouldn't shoot them past 20 yards, and I really think that's pushing it. Aguila SSS rounds pack a good punch and are quieter than standard or subsonic .22's, but they're still much too loud for use in the suburbs or anywhere where you have neighbors nearby. Since the bullets they fire are also 50% heavier and longer than conventional .22 lr's, (just the bullet, the overall cartridge is the same length), they tend to become unstable past around 30 yards and start to tumble, although accuracy doesn't suffer as badly as you might think. Aguila Colibris are pretty much a joke. They are mouse fart quiet, accurate to maybe 10 yards if you're lucky and pack about as much punch as a Crosman 760. In general, with .22 rimfires, the longer the barrel on your gun the quieter the report will be. Pistols can still seem pretty loud even when you're just shooting CB's, while a long barreled rifle firing CB's will be quiet enough that your neighbors shouldn't hear it if there's any background noise at all. If you need something that's quiet and effective for pest control one other option might be archery. A good compound bow or crossbow is both quiet and very deadly. |
