The 50 cal intrigues me, but where do you shoot it?  My club has ample backstop for a round like this, but what is the minimum amount or thickness needed in the berm behind the target to stop this round?

I would have to say at least 2-3 feet of HARD packed dirt as a minimum. The backstop at the range I shoot at is a Mountain, so no worries.

50 Shooter, thanks.  I just could not get that question out of my head.  About twice a year I think about getting a 50.

My "new" club backs up to range of hills that is mostly limestone.  So now that I have a place to shoot a 50..........??

I need to stay out of this board or I will get in to it!!

To late, sounds like your already being assimilated. Do not resist, your attempts would be futile.

Please do not reply to this message anymore.  The notification drags me back here!

I will admit, I did read all the posts in this 50 cal forum today.  I figure I am already in a ton of govt. databases anyway, what is one more.  The database for gun guys who are absolutely nuts.  But when I read it kicks less than a 20 gauge slug, and I love shooting 12 gauge slugs at stuff.

The thing is, a 50 cal really is nuts.  But I could see where it could be fun for long range competition.  Who cares if you win or lose after a day on the range with a bunch of guys with 50's!!  I would be laughing all day long.

If I change my priorities for 2003, I could see it happening in the second half of next year.

50_Shooter,

I am a mountain.  But I didn't know you were shooting at me!  What did I do?  No worries?  Man, I'm plenty worried!!

You bastards, I sit down with Orange juice, I am just going to log on and check a few e-mails, surf a little then head over to the office for A saturday meeting.  So how do I start my day?  Here at the 50 cal forum.

I bought my first AR exactly 25 months ago, in case Gore won that election.  Now I have wandered over to this part of AR15.com.  This may be where I truly belong, shotguns and 50's!!

I tell you what, let me get my new reloading stuff set up this winter.  Then if that liberal congress woman Pelosi from California gets the Democrat leadership role, I will move my priorities to a 50 next year.  Just to piss of a few liberals!!

Well, as long as I am here, I might as well check all the posts again.  What are the top 3 50 cal web sites?  I need to start hitting those.

One more thing, how about all the activity on AR15 the past day or 2.  Yesterday there were a 1000 people on the site when I came in to it.  I love it!

Top 3 .50 sites? This (AR15.com) would have to be #2, Biggerhammer is #1 and seeing how we're such a small commmunity Culvers Shooting Pages .50 forum would have to be #3. I would include the FCSA's forum but you have to be a member to get in.

I can tell by the way your talking that you have your mind set on a certain .50 already. Go ahead, it's okay, your other gun won't get jealous. As for the reloading stuff, you might want to look into a reloading set for the .50 that you can load smaller calibers on.

I once shot my AR50 into cardboard.  The cardboard was banded together and was about 3'-4' thick.  (Very compressed)  The guy who owns it said the bullet probably went in 12"  I think it was more than that but I dunno.

Ok, a $1200 dollar 50 is interesting, but I don't have a semi-auto .308 yet either.  The question I have to struggle with now is, Why would I buy a 50 BEFORE I buy, say an AR-10?

The 50 is more at risk of being banned than a .308.

A 50 is really damn big and can split rocks.

I can't afford semi-auto 50 but I can afford a .308.

Things to ponder on.

Anybody ever dig a 50 bullet out of the dirt after firing it?

Personally I wouldn't buy anything Hesse makes and for that matter ANY ATN scopes! For those people that wish to, all I will say is I wish you luck.

The .50 isn't any more likely of being banned then the AR-10 but if your worried about it then that's all the more reason to buy one. The semi-auto feature would be nice but a single shot ain't to bad either and the price is alot less.

You could always save up and get the AR-10 later as there are alot out there.

Speaking of scopes, since these guns seem to be so heavy, use a brake so effectivley, and not recoil to badly, do they tear up the scopes?

Yes, there was a thread over on Biggerhammer about the effects of .50's on scopes. It was just brought back up again over the last few days.

Some people have had good and bad luck with Tasco, so far I haven't heard anything good about ATN.

The brakes on the .50's are doing to scopes what air rifles do, you have a large mass working against the scope in both directions.

It's better to buy a good scope and not have any problems then buy a cheap scope and not be able to shoot your rifle because the scope is in the shop. That's if it even has a warranty that covers it.
