Im curious how one would go about finding out about the legality of a machine gun if one was found , not saying Ive found one but if you were to come across one and nobody had any idea how could you go about figuring it out? Has there always been paperwork needed even prior to the ban? If a MG was purchased say 40 years ago has the process remained the same?

When the law went into effect, there was an amnesty period for people to register their war trophys and other stuff like that.

If it doesn't have a Form 4 (or Form 3 if a C3 dealr) it ain't legally transferable.

The process has remained the same since 1934.

In 1968 there was a 30 day amnesty to register what ever you had lying around, after that time, any and all unregistered items became contraban.
