Finished building the jig today. My brother in law has a shop press that I'll use to bend the sheet metal. His house is about a 40min drive from me. The gunshow is this weekend and his house is on the way so I'll stop by for a visit afterwards.
I bent a sheet metal channel to help guide the mandrel. This the keep it turning over.

Unfortunately, I have neither the financial resources or the machinery to manufacture these on a production level. The propose of this tread it to document what I have done so others can build their own. When I come up with a rail system that works and is easy to build I will post a step by step tutorial. I only have a Marlin 336. I don't know if my rail system will fit any other models. |

Made a little bit of progress. I bent the handguard and cut it to length. Still need to cut the barrel channel. The front end cap is almost done. Just needs a bit of polishing. I'll have both caps done tomorrow.

Almost done with the rear end cap. Went over board with a file and now its a little loose. I want a nice tight fit so I'm going to try and fix it with J-B weld. I used some painters tape to mark the taper on the handguard. With the curved surface, scribing a line was too difficult.

Getting closer. Tomorrow, I will add the side rails. By the end of the week, the hand guard will be finished. I can't afford to buy anymore casting resin right now. So the side saddle will have to wait. In the mean time, I work work on a scout scope mount. I also have an idea for a collapsible stock.

Ever consider making the side saddle out of something solid and then running a piece of rubber through all of the slots, coming into the slot just a little, the rubber is what retains the shells then. I think Mesa does it this way.

I used Rust-oleum Truck Bed Coating. Tried the paint on an AR mag last week and I like the texture. Hopefully, it holds up well. I'll post pictures tomorrow afternoon. |

Edit- I used Rust-oleum Truck Bed Coating. It gives the stock a nice texture. Similar to 220 grit sandpaper. It seems to have a little bit of a shine so I'll give it a coat of flat black. |

| Came up with yet another sidesaddle design. This one mounts completely different than the others. I know I usually post a cad model but I haven't made one yet. A prototype of the new sidesaddle will be finished in a couple of days. |

I would only use one mounting point/bracket on top of the rail. One should be enough. Call LaRue and partner up to out a qd lever on that bad boy. I would place the singular mounting point in the middle of the shell holder so that it would fit in between the scope rings. Ground breaking stuff going on in this thread here  |

Here is the new mounting plate. To attach it I had to make a replacement for the safety. I never use it anyway.. The bottom screw was difficult to find. None of my local hardware stores carry #12 machine screws. Finding one with 28tpi is almost impossible. Lucky, I found one tuck away with some old gas fittings. Tomorrow, I will work on the rest of the sidesaddle.

18 months ago I started this project. It was going to be a simple sidesaddle but it evolved into a full blown rail system. 9 prototypes later I have finally come up with a sidesaddle that requires no mold making, resin casting or fancy machinery. This one is made from two pieces of acrylic with o-rings sandwiched between them. This is just a quick mockup. The next one will be made out of aluminum.

I made an aluminum version today but I screwed up. Somehow, the table is tilted slightly. None of the holes will line up right. Tomorrow, I will realign the table and start over.

| It will still be awhile before I offer any for sale. I'm having trouble with the o-rings. For some reason they like to stick to the brass making it difficult to remove ammo. I'm currently experimenting with different materials. I also need to find a company that can anodize the parts. |
