How well does the lever function with the front handle positioned as it is?

I'm done designing the mold. Tomorrow, I'll start building it.

Works great. The grip can be position to the rear of the rail without interference.

Finally got around to finishing the mold.  Tomorrow morning I will pour the casting resin.

Last night, I mixed up the casting resin and poured it into the mold. 45min later I was able to take the casting out. It sure was a pain in the ass.

Two things I learned.
1) Read the damn directions. When it says to shake the bottle. Shake the damn bottle.
2) Crisco Butter Flavored cooking spray does not make a good release agent.

Tonight I will try again this time using vaseline as a release agent. Here some pictures of the casting. You can see some of the edges got torn. When you push ammo into the holes it bends the casting. It can easily flatten out.

Bahahahahahahahah.  You just made my day.

Keep up the good work though.  Definitely creative.

Does the holes need to be slightly larger...or the slit to each hole a little wider?

Will you need some extra space on the ends to attach to the 'mounting 'plate?  Kinda like the Tac Star shell carriers for the Remy 870.

Oh & I'm really interested in how this turns out.
I'm also looking for simple, creative, easy, strong ways to mount a vertical grip & QR sling mount to the fore end . http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=6&f=47&t=295897&page=1&#2603724

Each hole needs to be about .03" wider. .03" doesn't sound like much but it adds up.

The casting is over sized so I can machine each both edges so it would look like a Tac Star. I came up with a different way of attaching the casting to the bracket so it will make it look better.

It doesnt look like there is much room to mount like a tac star.

-Cool project BTW.

Time for me to get back to this project. I designed a new mold that should work better.  On this one the casting will be directly adhered to the mount. There will also be several hidden fasteners. I'll start building it tomorrow.

Just got though pouring the mold. What a mess that turn out to be.

Here I'm trying to repair a deadblow hammer and make an 8oz soft face ball peen hammer. The other casting will be turn into soft vise jaws.

If I keep trying to cast my own parts I'm going to have to invest in a vacuum chamber.

IT WORKED!!!

There are six bugle head machine screws and eight counter sunk holes that keep the sidesaddle from peeling off. I'm a little surprised by how well the holes fill up. I figured there would be a bubble at the top of each on.

Here are the hammer.

The resin leak around the painters tape but it will peel off.

Still have to do the other side.

Tomorrow, I will remove the flashing and clean it up.

The sidesaddle is holding the ammo nice and tight.

For some reason a strange pattern was left on the casting. I think its from trapped air bubbles. I kinda like it.

I gotta tell you Holloway, that is a nice looking rifle.

It would blow my mind if you put a collapsible stock on there. You could even have the action cycle back into the buffer tube.

I do have an idea for a Benelli style collapsible stock but it would quire modifications to the receiver. Maybe in the future I'll attempt it.

Any type of side folder would interfere with the lever.

I'll start working on the rail in a couple of days. I have a new design for the quad rail that is more compact but it will be some time before I can start on it.

One of the pockets tore today. I need to find a more suitable casting resin.

Link Posted: 2/16/2010 7:27:16 PM EDT
[#40]
Upon further investigation I have discovered the cause of the tear. Air Bubbles! In the picture below the tear started relatively straight then changes direction. Where the tear changes directions is where I finished tearing the rubber. Notice how this small portion is smoother then the rest. The rougher part was caused by trapped air bubbles. If I continue my work I will have no choice but to build a vacuum chamber.

On the plus side, the pocket still holds ammo.

Cool project Holloway.

Have you thought about reinforcing the case holder loops with nylon material?  It works great for keeping silicone intercooler couples from splitting.

I don't think adding any type of fiber reinforcement will help. It will keep the the "loops" from stretching and holding the the case tightly. I am going to experiment with the method just on case. I have been doing more research. With thin wall casting you run the risk of trapping bubbles. Using a pressure chamber will eliminate this problem. Basically, you set the mold in the chamber then pour the resin. Quickly, you must secure the lid and increase the air pressure(50-60psi) before the resin sets. The added air pressure with crush the bubbles.

I also came up with a new handguard design. It will be made from 16ga sheet metal. Monday, I'm going to order the metal and more casting resin.

Short of getting a vacuum chamber, have you thought about using a vibrator (huh, huh) to dislodge the air bubbles? A small motor with an offset weight on it attached to the mold might do the trick.

edit: spelling

I haven't read of anyone trying that. Not sure if it will work. I know a pressure chamber will do the job.
