Well, you ARFCOMERS got me started on this, so I'm going to ask you to help me pick a scope. I live in the Midwest where, even if I wanted, shots beyond 500 meters is pretty rare. What scope should I get for a couple hundred? I see scopes with drop marks for the 5.56. Is there one for the .308?
UPDATE: Oh folks, these are getting to be some high quality (and expensive) scopes. I should be able to hit at 300 meters without any problems just with iron sights. I'll admit to getting older, so I only need to go out another 200 or 300 meters. I think that is pushing the farthest shot I'd get in this part of the country. That is the reason for a scope that is only a couple hundred. I do appreciate the input, though. |

A good high quality scope is the Trijicon Accupoint 3-9x. It's listed online for 1k on a trijicon site but you can normally get it on Amazon for about 800.
I had the Accupoint for a while but I didn't like I couldn't get a buis with it. So I decided to get the acog 4x which had a buis mounted on top. I love this acog and it has drops for the .308. I highly recommend spending about 800 or more. You got a 1500+ rifle and you want a 200 dollars scope on it? Sounds like a really bad idea but whatever floats your boat. I think having a quality scope on a quailty gun is important. Just go on optics planet and select price range and choose one with good reviews. |

There are several scopes under $500 that I would take in a heartbeat over anything magnified from Trijicon. If he only wants to shoot to 300m, then dropping $800 isn't the best money spent. I wouldn't use an Accupoint if it were given to me free. Half of them don't even have externally adjustable turrets, and the other half have a mismatched reticle and click values (ie MOA clicks and a mil reticle). OP, check out a fixed power SWFA with mil clicks and a mil-quad reticle. Those SWFAs are bulletproof and have 100% reliable tracking in my experience, so they are good to go and great for a semi auto 308. Bear in mind that semi auto 308s are notorious for breaking scopes due to the force of the bolt moving, so whatever you get, make sure its built like a rock. And for under $300, you won't find anything built tougher than the SWFAs. SWFA SS 10x42 mil/mil If you dont plan on shooting past 300m, then a fixed 6x will let on more light and produce a clearer image. SWFA SS 6X42 mil/mil
If you want to spend a little more money for something a little higher quality, then check out the offerings from Vortex. |

You could probably find something from Leupold that would just be GREAT! Or any of several other brands.
I'm a cheapskate, and I like old stuff -- I shave with a double-edge safety razor using a mug and brush -- so I might be tempted to find a 1950's Weaver K6! |

There's a good reason for it, too. Also, I wouldn't recommend something that I haven't tested myself, and I can say that the SWFA scopes have been great for me. I had one on a bolt action Savage a year ago, and I have one on my M1A right now. http://i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p691/nigelcornwallis/20130925_154359-1_zpsd99aa151.jpg Quoted:

Pointman12, You are the second to recommend that brand of scopes. I'll admit, I'm interested. There's a good reason for it, too. I almost bought the Navy grey model because of yours, but ended up upgrading my black model to OD. |
