I'm mailing my CMP order off on Monday. I'm getting one field grade and one service grade M1 garand. This evening I was checking their website, and in addition to Springfield Armory, they also have Harrington & Richardson field and service grade Garands for the same price. Which one should I go with? Which will end up with more collector value? |
How will you know if you get a late production SA before ordering? I think I might have to get a Service Grade of Each...... |
Put a sticky note on your order with your request. |
I've always read it that the HRA's were (the Duff books also say this). Main reasons were that since HRA was a sporting arms maker their standards for FIT and FINISH (that was for chromeluv) were higher. That being said, I LOVE my HRA's |
Winchester was a sporting arms manufacturer as well. They had huge problems with QC. However, if Duff likes the HRA's it's probably true. |

The late SAs were the pinnacle of SA production. The HRAs are highly regarded, as are the International Harvester M1s. The thing about CMP though is that ALL of the rack, field, and service grades are mixmasters (negating the "superior fit and finish" advantage), so IMHO unless you are trying to get a receiver made by each of the four manufacturers, it doesn't matter. I have had one of each and my best shooter was the SA. If you live within a 4 hour drive of either store I would suggest going in and picking out one for yourself. It is an experience that you'll not soon forget. |

My HRA service grade is nearly new and perfect. My SA service grade is very good. I'd get one of each. So what if you don't get a later SA, that only means it will be a WWII serial number. The best rifles I"ve seen in the hands of common'rs like myself are HRAs |

I placed my order for a SA service grade two weeks ago and it was posted as pending on the 21st. Does anyone know if it is too late to request an order change to an H&R? If it's not how would I go about requesting the change? Any advice will be appreciated thanks in advance. |

for field and service grade guns the only thing H&R will likely be the reciever with a mix of other parts. those guns were all rearsenaled a few times over and parts replaced with whatever was on top of the box. i order whichever was cheaper if there was a cost difference. you are getting a shooter, not a collector gun. |
The H&Rs are being posted as the same price as the SAs on the CMP web site. |
Unfortunately, that's true. When I got my Greek HRA "Racker" (for $295 ), I was pleasantly surprised to find it hardly used at all and the only thing NOT HRA on it was the rear sight elevation spindle ( it's a BM59 part ).
