Well, i disassembled and reassembled and the action is loose in the stock. It was before disassembly as well not just after. is this normal?

And i ran into a problem with the bolt, i am trying to put it back in but the black push in button is hitting the stock.

HELP PLOX ARFCOM!

Kinda sad that it is loose in there, hopefully there is a fix.

Also there is nothing over the front sight (can't remember name of the piece) is this normal?

Did you install the magazine well upside down? It only goes one way and if in wrong you won't be able to seat the action in the stock.

Maybe pics will help. Give me a minute.

It's not like it is sloshing around in there but there is the slightest bit of play in there.

Maybe that is normal, who knows.

Try backing off the action screws a bit and see if it takes care of the safety issue so you can insert the bolt. Yours seems to be missing the front sight hood, if there is a slot on either side, it was made for one, not all that uncommon for those to be missing.

You have to recock the bolt before you can insert it into the receiver.  I could tell you how but pictures are better.  Go to wwwsurplusrifles.com. and you will find a section on recocking the mauser bolt.  They also have a step by step illustrated how to on taking your m48 apart and putting it together again.

Any reason why it is a little loose in the stock? Is this normal?

Bolt taken care of, had to muscle it a little bit.

And you see the mag well in one of those pics, that hole in it? There is a metal piece but it is up there a few mm. Is there a rivet that goes there or something?

Will a Kar98 sling fit?

Overall, good deal ARFCOM?

Everything on the outside has like no black finish on it - all silverish look.

I think it's used

That's ok, i love the look.

I have posted like 14654 times in a row

Also, one minor crack on the handguard behind the rear sight and one minor crack right behind the back end of the bolt in the stock.

This is what I am thinking, ran into this when I bought my first mauser years ago.

Here is a link to the re-cocking of the bolt.....

Bolt issue is fixed fellas, focusing on the looseness inside the stock .

So what was the fix

Needed to be recocked.

Glad to see you got it figured out. It's a common mistake, is this your first mauser

Yes it is.

Stock has two minor crack, one behind  the bolt kind of on the butt stock and one behind the rear sight.

Are these going to grow?

I cannot really make an educated guess without seeing pics. There are a few guys on here who know a decent amount about stopping cracks from spreading, maybe they will chime in.

Exactly what is loose?

By chance are you referring to the magazine floor plate? I know the plate on my M48 has very slight <1mm play.

The action is loose in the stock so i was told to bed it.

Bedding will take care of any looseness. You may try some shims to tighten it up.

How does it shoot? If it is reasonably accurate for your needs, I would not worry too much if the stock fit is a bit loose. The recoil lug area is the most critical, if you are seeing a lot of compression or cracking of the stock in this area, the bedding may be necessary.

Bedding the way O_P recommended (JB WELD)

Doing that today, will keep all of you guys updated.

Is the recoil lug that metal bar inside the stock?

Thanks for all the help once again guys.

At one point you asked if a KAR98 sling would fit, yes, it will work, but is generally more valuable than a Yugo M48 sling. Last time I checked, Rick Reich had Yugo M48 slings, don't know if he still has them or not, but you could ask:  [email protected]

Looking at your pictures it looks like the stock has the trigger guard cut-out too deep.  The screws are hitting the shoulder before compressing the stock.  Were it me, I would get another stock from Gun Broker or Gun Parts and save the original if it's number matches the receiver.

Of course the quick and easy way would be to put a washer under the trigger guard/mag well at the screw points.

As you can see from the above as soon as the magazine block hits the receiver you can't get it any tighter.  A good fit will compress the wood just slightly so that the receiver doesn't wobble.  Your trigger guard stock cut out seems to be a little deep so I think you may have the trigger guard/receiver as tight as it will go, but there is no wood being compressed.  Maybe some cardboard shims where the arrows are will make the receiver fit tighter in the stock.  Another way to go would be to bed the receiver to the stock using the bedding compound to make up for the missing wood.

Numrich shows an M48 stock (stripped) for $34.95.
