I'm considering buying a G3. Does anyone have any info? Availability of parts, mags, etc...

Check out Tapco, they are on the internet and they should have cheap parts. Six months ago the prices for G-3 parts and magazines were low. That's something I never expected, since H&K parts have historically been pricy . . .

I have a G3 parts gun: receiver by Federal, barrel & upper by H&K. Mags were running in the $40 range, now I see them down to $25-30 in ads.
I love my G3, no GD gas adjuster to fool with, just load & shoot!!!

Inter Ordnance and AIM have G3 mags in very good to exc condition for less than $10 all factory German.
You can get a complete parts kit for around $120 in fair to good condition.
