I've got a pretty decent folder knife collection that I rotate for EDC, however I am looking at creating my survival/keep in car backpack and I want to purchase a fixed blade knife. I am not too sure where to begin searching so I am posting here for some idea. I'm not even sure of the blade length, steel, or blade style.

Please suggest a fixed blade knife too keep in a survival backpack and also to take on camping trips that...

- Is an overall quality knife
- Is a great "bang for the buck" piece
- Doesn't feel or perform cheap/underpar
- Will take abuse and still hold a sharp edge (cutting/prying)
- Comes from the factory very sharp
- Would perform in a self defense and survival situation
- Under $50

Is there a blade out there that will do the job?

It might be $10 - $15 over your price limit, but the Gerber LMF comes to mind. I have one and it's a pretty good knife. Stays sharp, does what I need it to do.

Good advice at http://www.equipped.org/devices5.htm

Moras are cheap and great knives for the money.  See: http://www.ragweedforge.com/SwedishKnifeCatalog.html.  Doug Ritter likes the Ericksson brand.

Svord of New Zealand also makes terrific knives for the money.  I have the Svord Kiwi, which isn't pretty, but is a great knife in the $30 to $50 range.  It definitely meets all your criteria.

+1  on the mora..  great cheap knife.

i have the carbon steel blade and it holds a great edge.   it has skinned many deer, squirrels and cleaned too many fish to count.
or for $20 more than the $50 budget get a ka bar usmc.

I would say a Mora is the best option under $50.

You can check out the Condor line. They get great reviews for being a lower priced knife.

GLOCK makes a good fixed blade knife and you can get em as cheap as 35 bucks if you look around, they also come with a sheath.

about $10 over your budget but it's a workhorse of a blade.  You can friggin cut trees down with this bitch.  The Ka-Bar Becker BK2 Companion Knife.  A little on the heavy/bulky side, and not suited for surgical type shit, but it's a good all around camp knife.

Take a look at the Condor line of knives. You can get a wood handled Bushlore for well under $50.00. Knife hog has the micarta version for $41.00.

Or there is the "bushman" series.

The GI comes with a better sheath now than it used to.

SOG Seal Pup but it's over $50.

If you don't need to chop wood with it I like to clip a CRKT Sting AG Russell to my pack strap.

If you want a larger knife suitable for chopping get yourself a machete.

Ive got lots of knives. Go with light. I used a little crkt thin almost pen knife when backpacking. Basically you arent gonna need to cut down a tree with your knife while backpacking and if you do you arent doing it right. So watch your weight nothing like sitting down after a long couple of days and looking at all he stuff you humped and didnt need. Be smart in your choice. Mora knifes are hard to beat... And cheap.

KaBar Becker Bk9 gets my vote 75ish range.
The bk9 is a beast it stays sharp and is a great camp hiking knife.

The SOG Junjle Canopy can be had at 50 dollar range and is a close secong to the bk9.

Take a look at the Gerber gator fixed.  A good amount of Gerber's line is shit (IMHO) but the gator has held up as an all around capable pack knife for me.  You could always save your pennies and get an ESEE 4 or an Fallkniven F1 and you will be happy, happy, happy......I have about 60 fixed blades in the realm of what you are looking for (bit of a collectors bug). IM me  if you have questions on specific knife model.  Good luck.

If you want a shorter blade you cant go wrong with the Bk2.

If you can rustle up another 60 cents, the Ontario SP47 is one hell of a knife for the money. Super tough 5160 carbon steel, good size, very useful blade shape, really ergonomic handle and a good sheath.

I know I'm going to get flamed here, the Bear Grylls Gerber isn't a bad knife for under $50.  I think Walmart sells them for $44 and change.  I got one for Christmas (something a of running joke in the family, I always get a knife for Christmas).  The blade is a slightly smaller version of their LMF II (which I also have).  The sheath is kind of hokey but if you can ignore the Bear Grylls logo it isn't  all that bad.  And the firestarter thing is just kind of cool.

Gerber Prodigy, almost the same as the LMF, just $20 cheaper. :) http://www.amazon.com/Gerber-22-41121-Prodigy-Survival-Knife/dp/B000XH5H6W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1357330483&sr=8-1&keywords=gerber+prodigy

Somewhere on yotube there's a video of one coming apart when being used to baton.  Some people care about that sort of thing, but I don't really.  I only use knives for cutting, not for splitting.  I think that guy is a squirrel but I wouldn't refuse the knife if someone wanted to give me one.
