Very cool. Have you decided on a handle material yet?

Here are a couple pictures that I have taken this morning.  Last night I knocked the rasp side down to where there is just the indentions.  Started smoothing down the file side where the handle will be.  The handle material that I will be using is going to be stabilized Koa.  It was ordered yesterday.  Unfortunately after the order was made the picture was unavailable.
Only tools missing in the picture is my quick grip and hack saw.

So far it seems to fit my hand fairly well so far.

My block of koa came in.  Think will look good when fitted.

Also learned a lesson about this wood it is super hard and my table saw does not like it.

So now I had to cut and expand an old miter box.

In the future I will let the supplier cut them into scales since he offers to do it for free.

Free, and you graciously decide to do it yourself?

I remember when I was like that.

How'd you shape it? Anneal it first then sand or did you just sand the tempered steel to shape?

Annealed then alot of hacksaw and file work.  If
you're thinking about it.  Use nicholson files as they have a know metal content.  If you want to do it right get some high carbon 1080 1084 from Aldo at nj steel baron.  He is geared towards knife makers.  From what I understand he is a great guy to deal with.  My next knife will be made from some of his metal.

Edited for correct metal number.

You were busy playing with that new sander.  Thanks for the kind words.  Since you set the bar kinda high for first time knives. Done some beveling last night.  Which has started making it look alot different.  I'll get those pics up when I quit playing super trucker for the week.

Good work on my Christmas present!

Wish I had gotten some of the koa wood from of Schofield Barracks after Hurricane Eva. That was a unique pinkish tone that incredibly hard. It would have been a great wood for the handle for you.

Here is where I'm at.  Been beveling the edges and added a few groves to the spine.  I gave up on trying to file away all of the file marks ass they are deep and would make things thinner than I would like.  Realized I haven't ordered any bolts.  So time to spend some money.  Parts are like Lays potato chips you can't just buy one.

Well guys I went ahead and drilled my holes for my fasteners, heated and quenched it.  The edge is about as thick as a dime.  Now I've got a question.  How should I go about putting on an edge.  Do it like a machete?   Single cut bastard than emery cloth on a block than coarse side of diamond sharpener than fine.  Hell I might have answered my own question.

The first one I made, I used a Lansky and a coarse stone to set the angle, then medium, then fine.  Was a lot of work.  I used a belt sander grinder on the last one. I had to be careful not to get the edge overheated and ruin the temper as my grinder is single speed and fast.
