Howdy guys I have a quick question. Im about to pull the trigger and order my first M1. While looking on the CMP site It looks like I have 2 options that are in my price range, the field grade Winchester or the Service grade springfield. I would like to have a winchester m1 because of the popularity but am a little afraid of the condition.. Is this a decent starter rifle? If not should I get the service grade Springfield? Thanks again for your time. |
| If you are looking for a shooter that will have quite a bit of barrel life left in it, get the Service Grade. The Winchester field grades will be Mixmaster’s. All that is required for it to be sold as a Winchester is the Winchester receiver. If you were going to one of the stores it is possible to pick out a Field Grade that is in pretty good condition. If you are ordering by mail, get the Service grade. You will be more assured of receiving a serviceable rifle that will give you many years of use. |

The people above are giving you good advice.
The Winchesters, though collectible and desirable, that the CMP are putting are typically more worn and a mix of parts. The SA's, though common and lesser desirable (collectively speaking), have a good chance of being in great condition as well as close to having all correct parts, adding to value. Whichever you choose, you're getting an amazing, historic, AMERICAN battle rifle for a great price delivered right to your door. |

Good advice in the above posts. I have two Garands now, my first was a CMP Springfield SG. If it is you first Garand and you want to dabble, say switch out parts to get it "correct", or you want a shooter, get the SG. Winchester parts can be more $, especially if you get a WWII rifle, just because they are not as available. The SG will almost be a lock as a good shooter, I am getting fist size groups at 100 yards with surplus M2 ball from my CMP Garand right out of the box. (After a complete tear down, cleaning, inspection, and oiling/greasing). I just sent in an order for a rack grade carbine, i have my fingers crossed that it will not have a garden stake for a barrel. Good luck on your purchase. the CMP Garands rarely disappoint. |

Quoted: Thanks for the pics!here is a pic of a HRA and Springfield service grade. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y217/lemanster/GARAND/5.jpg i agree get either one. also ask for USGI wood on the form. you wont be guarenteed it but a lot of Springfields seem to be showing up with replacement birch stocks. i bought a woodless winnie also but like mentioned its rough. my plan is a total rebuild. for 595 plus shipping the service grades are wonderful weapons |
