I just purchased a Ruger 10/22 Tactical Target Talo edition rifle. It came with a 16 inch target barrel with crown, target trigger pack, bipod, weaver scope mount, and a birch stock. I placed a Vortex Crossfire 1.5-4 scope on it and cant wait to take it to the range. I've got a 77/22 that was actually my first rifle, but I've never owned a 10/22 until now. I've picked up a box of Winchester 333, (36 gr,copper plated HP, 1280 fps), and a box of the Federal Auto Match (40 gr solid, 1200 fps) to use in it while I get it sighted in and too see which one it prefers. Anyone use either of these readily available ammo for target shooting, and if so, how does it perform? http://www.ar15.com/media/viewFile.html?i=38317 http://www.ar15.com/media/viewFile.html?i=38316 Never been a fan of the 16" heavy barrels (they look out of proportion to me, I don't doubt the accuracy improvement), a 1.5-4x scope is good for a 22 rifle, anything under 6x is good in my book. Mine hates Winchester 333, doesn't go bang every time for whatever reason, Federal auto match on the other hand are it's second favorite brand. I get my best groups with CCI Blazers and Stingers. |

Well, you have the gun and the ammunition... I was hoping you could tell us how well they worked together. I'm waiting for a CMMG 22 upper for my AR to show up so I can take everything to range together. I have twin two year old daughters and a third one on the way, so I kinda have to maximize my range time. Full report will follow when I get it to the range. |

I've tried both of those out in my Sig 229 22 conversion kit and it wasnt really wild about it. I'm hoping that all my 10/22, the CMMG upper, and the 229 will all shoot one brand of readily available ammo reasonably well. Truth be told, I'll be happy if I can get the CMMG 22 upper and the 229 conversion kit to work well with the same brand of ammo. I had been looking for a 10/22 Tactical Target with the bipod and the Hogue stock and stumbled into this and really liked look of it. It was less expensive than the Tactical Target, and the Target, and I'd always wanted one, so I bought it. I've never really been a benchrest shooter. What kind of accuracy are people getting out of these target 10/22's? |

Try a box of Wolf Match –– yah, Wolf –– it's made by SK in Germany Shoots great in (most –– ymmv) 10 22s If it doesn't work now try it again 4 or 500 rounds down the line Will do. I've read that the CMMG uppers benefit from polishing the feed ramp and brushing the bore/chamber with a bore brush powered by a drill....would this apply to the 10/22 as well, or not? |

My Savage bolt gun loves the Fed auto match and CCI standards. Nice lookin gun you've got there. Thanks! I like it just in handling it..... I cant seem to find the CCI Standards locally. Minimags and Stingers from CCI are readily available, but not the Standards... I just got an email from CMMG, the 22 upper has shipped out and should arrive on Monday, so hopefully, I can take both guns out to the range on my next days off. |

Mine likes Automatch, but it shoots teeny tiny groups with Wolf Match Target. It's hard for me to find locally but Midway sells it. Yeah, just bought 500 rds of Wolf Match, and 500 rds of Wolf Match Extra, along with some 223 and 308 from Midway this morning. First time buying ammo on the net also. I can definately tell the panic is setting in since ammo is getting scarce again... Hoping to be able to go to the range Friday so I can shoot both the 10/22 and the CMMG 22 upper and see what they like. |

I just purchased a Ruger 10/22 Tactical Target Talo edition rifle. It came with a 16 inch target barrel with crown, target trigger pack, bipod, weaver scope mount, and a birch stock. <snip> I just picked up the same rifle last Thursday. I was wondering, did yours come with a sling swivel stud or did you have to buy one. I have a sling loop swivel installed but I could not find a swivel stud in the box to replace it with so that I could mount the bipod. LMK. BTW, the photos of the rifle looks GREAT. |
|
Mine came with the forward sling swivel stud. But I only got one 10 rd magazine.
The instructions to mount the bipod werent exactly clear, but I figured it out. Thanks for the compliments on the photo's.....I was trying to avoid pics of my feet, and our trash can, as those pics were taken our kitchen. The CMMG 22 upper arrived today, so now all I'm waiting for is the ammo and confirmation of a babysitter for my 2 year old daughters..... |

Thanks MaxxII. Yeah, the Ruger comes with only one magazine nowadays. I'll look in the box and packages again to see if I missed the stud lying around in there. If no stud, I'll just buy one and install. The stud was attached on mine. Can you post a picture of it? I guess I dont understand why it would ship without it attached, or why someone would remove it? |
| I'll post a photo of what I have installed in regards to the sling loop swivel as soon as the Photobucket website is back up. I have a sling loop swivel installed on the forearm and the stock. I notice yours have just the swivel stud installed on the stock without the sling loop. |
|
That's correct. The bipod mounts on the forward sling swivel stud. There are two little teeth that fit into either side of the swivel stud and the rotary dial on the bipod actually tightens them up so they clamp down on the swivel stud and snug the bipod up to the stock.
Hope that makes sense. |

I called Ruger CS the other day. The rifle does not come with a single stock stud to mount the bipod. Told me to either cut the sling loop off, or replace the original part with an aftermarket stud. Oh well. That's crap....mine did. I got to the range yesterday. Pics will follow probably tomorrow. I shot the following ammunition through it: Winchester 333 HP's 36 gr Federal Target 40 gr solid Wolf Match Target 40 gr solid Wolf Match Extra 40 gr solid I'm not a bench rest shooter, and I was shooting at an indoor range with a max distance of 25 yards. No bench, just the tray table dealie found at every indoor range I've ever been to. I'm 6'02 and had to hunch down over the rifle, and try to get a good cheekweld and grip while bent over at the waist. What I'm saying is that if I was at a proper outdoor range with a bench and a table, I could do a whole lot better in terms of accuracy testing and shooting for groups....so when I do post pics, you understand why the groups are as bad as they are. Also, I didnt measure the groups as of the time of this post. I have the target, just havent been able to measure it. I will later when I post pics. Winchester 333.....rifle did not like. Best I could do was 1 inch center to center. Neither my 22 AR upper nor my Sig 22 conversion kit for 229 cared for it either. Wont be buying that again. Federal Target....Shot same as the Wolf Match Target.....0.5 inch center to center. Hit high slightly left. Wolf Match Target....Hit dead on, same size group as the Fed Target, 0.5 inch center to center. Wolf Match Extra....This shoots noticably hotter than the the Wolf Match Target, but also noticeably tighter. This is what the rifle shot best with a group right about 3/8ths of an inch. I will be buying more of this stuff for this gun. One thing to note, I have no idea what lube they used for the wolf ammo, but its almost like they raped a squid with it, that stuff is so greasy its on the verge of being slimy, but it shoots great! |
|
Obviously, there are guys here shooting tighter groups at twice the distance. But seeing as how I'm not a benchrest shooter, and was using a less than ideal position, I'm pretty happy with those.
Hopefully sometime soon, I can get out to an outdoor range and shoot at 50 yards and see how it does. |
|
Cool. You shot the Wolf Match ammo quite well and obviously with the other targets it is understandable that you were shooting under less than ideal shooting position.
Yeah, I know that Ruger substituted the sling loop swivel. Oh, well. I just will order a swivel stud with my new Nikon scope. Enjoy you new shooting stick. |
