I was thinkin of what gun I want to get when I turn 18 and was between a Fal, M-4, or another AK of some kind.  I'm leaning towards the Fal and was wondering if there are good mags that hold more than 20 rnds and where to purchase them?  Also how are these compared to a m1a1 in accuracy.  how much does a folder cost.  I picked up a fal carbine at orf and really liked the feel of it.  Thanks for the info.

You can get 30 rnd mags but they cost more, of course "more" is a relative term when you can buy 20s for $2-5 each.

I think an M1A1 would be a bit more accurate but it really depends on the individual rifles, many FALs shoot MOA or better.

You need a complete lower to use a folder on a FAL, the recoil springs are different. $350.

Define your goal, then buy the tool to meet it.

I'm not crazy about the FAL 30 rounders.  They use a 20 round mag spring and I've had some issues with them.  Others like them, but I don't.  They're too long and heavy anyway.

30 round mags for the FAL are too bulky, too heavy.

Ive got one.  I just use it for mag dumps and photo ops. Although it works pretty well, it really is heavy, and too long to be practical.  Besides, most 308 comes in 20 round boxes.

Well the Fal is an animal of a different coat vs an AR or AK style rifle.  With the AK and AR you have 30 rd mags, 75 rnd drums, and all kinds of other high capacity magazines inbetween.  Thats fine for 5.56, 5.45, or 7.62 x 39mm.  The FAL with 20rnds of 7.62 x51 is more than enough.  If your looking for fast shoot'em as accurate and as fast as you can pull the trigger, the FAL is not for you.  The FAL and M1a are both connosiuer type of rifles.  AK's the utilitarian. AR's are the gizmo modern and IMHO the easiest and most accurate firing platform available to us besides bolt rifles.  I've found one major fault with my STG58.  It was my first FAL and now I've got have more.....I got rid of my VEPR and acquired parts kits and away I go.

20 rounds of 308 is about all i would want hanging off my gun, thats a lot of weight.

militarygunsupply.com has mags for 5.00 apeice, use to anyway. There are plenty  of cheap fal mags around.

The folder adds aproximately $300.00 to the price of your FAL.

They do feel good in your hands...don't pick one up unless you plan on buying it!

I would suggest getting an AR first so you can get a bit of shooting in at a decent price before stepping up to the FAL. The 7.62 ammunition cost can prevent you from getting 3 meals a day.

Most places have surplus 7.62x51 for the same price as 5.56...around 15c per round before shipping.  Am I missing something?

Depends on what you want to run through your FAL and what you want to eat.

I prefer to use the 30rnder's I have a chest rig for them.  That gives me one in the FAL and four accross my chest.  I'm a big guy and the weight makes no difference to me.  If i'm shooting a match it puts me on par with the AR's.  If you look around you might be able to get 30's for $30.00.
When I started to look into building a gun myself I looked around and thought the FAL would be the most easy/ least expensive.  I didn't really like them but I have sense built 6 and just helped a friend build his.  I'm now set up to build two more.  They have definitly grown on me.

Generally speaking, quality surplus 7.62x51(Port, Aussie, S. African, etc...) can be had a bit cheaper than quality 5.56(Win Q3131A, Fed M193, etc) - so I don't know where you're getting that info from, unless you're talking about running Wolf through an AR-15...

7.62NATO = approx $140/800 rnds
5.56 = $180 to $200/1000rnds

Both still have to be shipped.... In my experience, my FALs are cheaper to shoot than my Ar-15 is....

Agreed...It all depends on the ammunition and what type of shooting you do.

Depends on what you want to run through your FAL and what you want to eat.
