Just purchased a FN M249S Para in FDE and I have a question about the linked Ammo, as long as its 5.56 can I use any linked ammo or does it have to be a specific one? (just to be clear, my question is about the links)

also what's the best place to buy ammo for the M249S?

thanks in advance..

Any linked ammo will work, you can even buy links and assemble your own belts.

Are you asking what model of links to use?

If so, it requires the M27 link. M13 are for the 240 and M60, and a 1919 takes its own.

Yes, that's the answer I was looking for.

Thank you.

Yeah it’s significantly easier/quicker than linking 7.62 NATO into M13 links (if you’ve ever done that).

With brass cases and M27 links, they just slide right in.

Mine also runs great with Magpul’s D60, but it’s easier to link 60 rounds than to load them into a D60. Usually I use the 100 round “nut sacks” but I have also just had raw belt hanging out from the left side, and that’s fine too (assuming you don’t drag it through the dirt, etc.)

I throw a big tarp down and position it so the links land on that, for recovery. If I’m shooting prone, I also bring a moving blanket and lay on that for comfort and to keep the weapon clean. If it gets muddy/dirty I just throw it away. Harbor Freight is your friend here. (They even put both of those on sale sometimes.)

The military links you buy are typically used. That's not an issue except the dry lubricant they had on them has been worn/washed off. I have found using Hornandy One Shot case lube on the links before linking makes it easier to link and easier on the gun stripping the rounds.

Do yourself a favor and buy one of these. Its worth 10X what you pay for it when you shoot beltfeds. Don't get the roller ones, and only buy one that is long enough to pick them standing up and has a release.

Sorry, my very first belt fed, have zero experience linking anything, YouTube videos are scarce and point out that you need to adjust every link with pliers....

The only people that have to adjust their links are the Shrike/Fightlite uppers.

If you step on a link and bend it up just toss it they are cheap enough. Hell I've been giving away my used links for years.

Linking ammo is easy and all you have to do is get the link tab into the extractor groove on the cartridge case. If you have kids its a great activity for them.

Loading M27 or M13 links are super easy.  I am continuously reloading/linking 250 rd 7.62 dummy rounds on M13 for minigun classes.

What in the world?!? I have a fightlite upper, and someone would have to be nuts trying to tweak every link. Get beer, sit down, put a movie on, pre-count 1 or 2 hundred links and rounds out, and mindlessly link to your hearts content. Going at a slow pace, paying attention to my movie for the most part, and taking sips of beer, can get at least 200 rounds linked every 20 mins or so. Then go shoot whenever. Easy peasy.
There are no stupid questions...but there are a lot of inquisitive idiots.

I ended up getting a plastic ammo box with 100 slots. Put rounds into holes, link all ammo in holes, if 200 round box desired, repeat process. This cut down on the counting, as it either was or it wasn't 100 rounds.

I just lay out five 20 round boxes, and know that’s 100rds. I link one box at a time. Repeat as needed.

Not even going to try to count the amount of 7.62mm dummy linked for M134/Mk44 Minigun training over the last 11 yrs.  Usually have around 200 rds for training that gets relinked numerous times for a class.

Only works if the ammo you are linking is in boxes.

Still doesn’t matter, you have a tape measure don’t you? A linked 100rnd belt is 48.3” open link to open link. Just go to town linking your ammo up and then split the belt at whatever quantity you want.

I've been shooting belted 556 since I got my Stoner 63a in 1994. My ammo for the last 28 years has been prebelted 4-1 with tracer in 150 rnd belts. I just break the belts into 4 round belts and a pile of 1round with a link. I then use a rubber mallet to reassemble the 4 round belts together and then all the tracer into a solid tracer belt. Never really cared if the belts were exactly 100rnds, hell its easier to load the Stoner 63a ammo boxes if they are short a few.

Do you use M27 links in your Stoner?

If so, can they all do that?
I’m struggling to recall the technical differences between M27 and Stoner links.

Ok, found this thread suggesting M27-specific parts are needed to ensure reliable feeding: https://www.ar15.com/forums/armory/Correct_links_for_Stoner_63/22-415821/?

Interesting. It’s a bit vague on which specific parts make up the “conversion”.

The Stoner 63 guns use the S63 link which is the for runner of the M27 links. They did not hold rounds as tightly and the pitch is slightly different. Stoner guns that the feed system has been worn pretty well will usually run with M27 links without an issue. Reed Knight had some feed lever arms made up for M27 links to be used in the Stoner 63 top covers. My gun has one of these feed lever in it since I bought the gun new from Reed in 1994. The feed levers are stamped M27 to tell the difference.  The feed levers are very close, just a slight bend change to adjust for the different link pitch.

What is strange, the Navy still stocked ammo for the Stoner 63 using M27 links until 1987. The ammo was given away to the Mk48 Mk 46 machine gun design finalist of which I was one. They gave 250K rounds to each for testing in the guns for $1. I think I still have about 15K rounds left.

In this picture you can see the feed arm with the M27 stamp on it.

Thanks for the detailed explanation!
Did the USN/NSW use the Knight M27 feed levers in their Stoners too?

What was your MK46 prototype design?

No they used the original feed arms, Reed did not come out with the M27 arm until he tried to market the Stoner 63a to Taiwan.

My Mk46 was a unique aluminum receiver design. We never had the money to prototype it and the RFQ was written for FN to win. KAC with their Stoner 86 was the other contender finalist.
