I am looking at  Orion Arms to engrave my weapon. Has anyone out there used them for custom engraving? If you have did you like their work? I figured since I was having the SBR stuff put on there I may have something else added for the heck of it.    thanks

Orion constantly receives good ratings around here.  I've had him do some custom engraving and it turned out better than I imagined....it's on his website.

I used him for two lowers and recieved them back before my check cleared about 5 months ago(about a two week turn around). They now have my Havoc and it has been about a month since I shipped it to them.

Thanks, for the info. Should I send the lower off now or wait until I have approval in hand?

I used them for an Uzi, MP5 clone, and PS90.  No complaints, fast turn-around.

Send it now.  It would have been best if you sent it BEFORE your Form 1 was sent, but that's water under the bridge...

Why would you send the lower off to be engraved before having stamp in hand? It seems logical the stamp would be first and the engraving and building next . So what part of the big picture I am not seeing? Just wondering. No one that I know has a SBR so the folks here on his site is where I getting much of my information. Much appreciated.

if you think the stamp will clear , send it in now . can't assemble it until it is both engraved and you have the stamp and its not an SBR until assembled . why wait 2 times , just have it engraved while waiting on the stamp .

There are two main reasons to get it engraved before having the stamp approved.  First, if you can save time by having them engraved while the paperwork is being approved and put you SBR together as soon as your stamp arrives.
Second, if for some reason the engraver screws up, you can amend your application with a different serial number while the application is pending.  If this happened after it was approved and you wanted a to use a different serial number, you would have to request a refund on your original form 1 (takes up to a year) plus start the paperwork process all over again for your new form 1.

I sent my lower to  Orion Arms the day before Thanksgiving and recived it back Dec 28. Great turnaround!!!! And to top that off they did a hell of good on the engraving as well. I would reccomned them after my experarance with them.  ATF has hadmy  form one month now, they cashed the the check on Dec . 1 I think I will give them a ring in mid Jan to see if I am pending or what is going on. Happy New Year to all, and I hope you all had a great Christmas.

Well if you engrave, assemble the lower and check function with a 16" upper and have an issue you're out $50 If you get stamp send off to engrave then find out you have an issue with the lower now you're $250 in.

I just had mine done by Charles Smyder and he did a great job. Not to mention it was really cheap.

Not to take away from the skills, service or turn around time of any of the folks listed, but I took mine to the trophy shop down the street, paid $12 (and no shipping) and watched while he did it.  I had it engraved before sending in my form.

There's nothing wrong with a trophy shop. You just have to make sure they can engrave anodized aluminum to the proper depth and because they aren't 07 FFL's, you can't leave it with them. Finally, I saw some pictures of work on this site that trophy shops have done on lowers and I was not impressed. It might be worth calling around and checking. I think a lot of people use the services most often talked about on this forum because they do it all the time, they are 07's, and their quality of work is known. Just my .02

I had Orion engrave one of my SBR's, and it was OK - just OK.  Turnaround was very reasonable.  There was nothing really wrong with the engraving.  It just didn't impress me like I thought it would.  When they "re-blackened" it, they only partly covered it.  It meets the requirements, but just doesn't look that nice.

So I sent my next SBR to Gary's Bunker in OH.  All I can say is WOW!!!  Their engraving looks soooooo much better than the Orion engraving.  There is really no comparing the two.  Gary's turnaround was really fast too.  He even moly-coated the engraving, which looks great!

Any of my future engraving will definitely be done by Gary's Bunker.

Just my .02.

Orion did beautifull work on my AR15 SBR.  I had the engraving done under the receiver near the trigger.

100% good company and quality work.

Was the first lower by Orion an oddball color?  He did my New stripped RRA lower and you can't tell there was any work done to it.

No.  I wouldn't say it was an oddball color.  It's a POF Gen I lower.  I had it engraved on the underside of the receiver, right next to where the trigger comes through.  The engraving was straight & neat, but it looked like it was just  "scratched" onto the receiver.  Since it wasn't blackened very well, the shiny silver color really comes through.  I'm definitely NOT bashing the guy.  I've seen some really nice pics of his work.  It's just not at all the quality job I expected, after reading all the good feedback about him.

YMMV

Surprising. I had mine done in the same place. Looks like a factory job.  I'll post a picture in a minute.

Yeah, your receiver looks really good!  Unfortunately, mine looks nothing like that.  Again, it meets the the requirements.  That's the most important thing.

I had mine done in... 2008 or early 2009, I don't remember.

Look on the bright side nobody will notice it if they dont look for it which is what I like.
